When I Grow Up I want to ......

I would venture to say each one of us had an idea what we wanted in later life based on something we enjoyed beginning from our early childhood. I remember the carnival coming to town during my pre-school years. My ambition was to own a carnival so I could have all the free rides I wanted. When I was about six or seven, my ambition was to be a steam locomotive engineer. The main reason was my desire to blow that steam whistle all day long.
I suppose it was the strawberry and peach ice cream on those hot and lazy days in Florida that once again made me change my mind and I decided owning an ice cream parlor was now at the top of the list. By the time I was a senior in high school, I realized I didn't want to own a carnival, be an engineer on a steam locomotive or own an ice cream parlor. Reality had set in. It was time to determine what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I decided the field of engineering was my choice and looking back over the years, I made the right choice.
One thing I did learn over the years, one of the most important choices we have to make is choosing our career path . Base your career choice on what you like to do. Doctor, lawyer, auto mechanic, garbage collector or even a ditch digger. Regardless of one's choice, be the best that you can be.
When one of my grandsons was of pre-school age his ambition was to drive a garbage truck. He was intrigued by the compaction action. Well, later on he decided he wanted to become a mechanical engineer but that interested faded and he finally decided to go to law school. Today he is happy as an attorney.

I was asked that once in a job interview

I replied "Dead." After letting them gulp a second I said, "When the little boy in me is gone I don't want to be around anymore." I didn't get the job and never knew if they found a better candidate, or my answer blew it.

After 3 years at Clemson & 3 in

the Army, I still had no idea what I wanted to do- just went back to college to have something to do. Late in that year a professor described a new grad degree that had just been approved and asked if I would be interested. At almost 73 years old & 47 years later I am still on the job and still enjoy heading out to “work” every morning

I majored in Agricultural Economics at Clemson with the goal of going back to the farm and building a huge commercial egg operation and become a millionaire farmer. Seriously. Well in Korea I was in a unit with several other officers who had already gotten their Masters Degree and planned to go on for another graduate degree. Sitting around in bull sessions I gradually shifted my goals toward the academic path. But I did fulfill my dream and bought a farm, worked in Governor s Office (on leave from the IUniversity), and in private industry for a spell and overall had an exciting and fulfilling career.

Some people are lucky and have their dream job. Some of us are not so lucky. At the age of 70 I'm still looking for what I want to do when I grow up.
