Add in how Wisconsin is ranked at 6-3?

Nov 7, 2021, 4:56 PM

A lot of parity in football this year but with Big Ten and SEC teams receiving the nod above others as usual.

I'm not sure how Wisky IS 6-3. That's more telling on how bad and overranked the b1g is... But same as albarn, if not them, then who. Us?

Do we beat Wisky? Probably but it would be a toss up.

I just did this for Penn St and Auburn, so I will just add Wisconsin.

Quick comparisons:
Strength of Record: Auburn 15 Clemson 19 Penn St 25 Wisconsin 28 (this is my preferred metric and why we should be ranked)
Strength of Schedule: Auburn 5 Clemson 7 Penn St 13 Wisconsin 31
I believe SOR looks at schedule and record, which is what really matters. We won and lost the games we should have.

FPI: Clemson 8 Wisconsin 9 Penn St 13 Auburn 15
Who knows what this means so let's just ignore it.

Game Control: Penn St 4 Wisconsin 8 Clemson 25 Auburn 34
AVG Win Percentage: Penn St 14 Wisconsin 17 Clemson 56 Auburn 67
This is the "EYE" test.

Efficiencies
Overall: Wisconsin 12 Penn St 14 Auburn 24 Clemson 29
Offense: Auburn 35 Penn St 45 Wisconsin 78 Clemson 83
Defense: Wisconsin 2 Penn St 7 Clemson 8 Auburn 20
Special Teams: Clemson 26 Auburn 38 Penn St 60 Wisconsin 120
And this is why they pass the "EYE" test.

Wisconsin best wins are Iowa 7-2 and Purdue 6-3
Wisconsin worst loss is probably Penn St 6-3
Penn St best wins are Wisconsin 6-3 and Auburn 6-3 and to me are propped up by their conference affiliation.
Penn St worst loss is Illinois 4-5.
Auburn best wins are Ole Miss 7-2 Arkansas 6-3
Auburn worst loss Texas A&M 7-2
Unfortunately, we do not have a best win (only team over .500 is Syracuse 5-4 oh and SC State 5-4), but we also do not have a worst loss. The teams that beat us are ranked higher than us, but quality losses only benefit the SEC.
Honestly, this is probably why they are ranked higher than us.

Too bad the ACC can't use the "we are cannibalizing ourselves" line like the SEC and Big Ten do.

New thought since adding Auburn to this analysis. Auburn is a SEC school so they have to be ranked and Penn St beat them so they have to be ranked too so Auburn does not have a bad loss. We will blame Penn St's lower ranking on that bad loss not SEC bias. Hows that sound?

Now after adding Wisconsin...
AP ranking is Auburn 16, Wisconsin 20, Penn St 23 Clemson 35 at best.
Auburn will use SOR
Wisconsin will use Efficiencies
Penn St will use Game Control
Clemson will use FPI (well we are not SEC team so we are not allowed to use that metric)

The only thing Clemson is last in is Efficiencies because of our offense. That is starting tick up and a lot of points against Uconn (Def Eff 123) and then Wake (Def Eff 78) should help us get ranked by the end of the season.
