There is only one person who can save Brownell at this point

Jan 20, 2017, 8:41 AM

Zion Williamson

If Brownell can get Zion Williamson to come to Clemson next year, he will not get canned this offseason. If not, blow it up and get a real basketball coach.

Coach Brownell, and he better get at it because tnet hasn't had a live firing for quite some time now.

fans are riding high from the football championship....probably carries most fans through January

Lets say we go 4-2 in our next 6...average results until 1st pitch.

Baseball starts out hot and wins the series against South Carolina....gets fans through the last the last 2 weeks of basketball season.

If that happens, there will only be about a 20 day window when folks even notice basketball. But if baseball starts out sluggish, the natives might demand a coaching sacrifice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're assuming everybody loves baseball..,,

Jan 20, 2017, 10:20 AM

Personally I'm not a fan...always pull for the Tigers, but couldn't care less about the sport of baseball

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The scary thing is that we really haven't lost any games

Jan 20, 2017, 8:56 AM

that we should've won on paper. UNC and UVA are both very good teams and clearly better than us. We were pretty close to pulling off an upset in both games, particularly UNC, but just couldn't quite get it done.

Winning at ND is very difficult and Louisville on the road is nearly impossible for a middle tier team. Those two teams have combined to lose 1 home game all season and that was UVA winning at Louisville.

The game at GT was a chance to pick up a road win, but they had just beaten UNC there in Atlanta the week before so it's not like that was a gimme by any means.

The ACC is just that good this year and we aren't quite up to par. We do have an opportunity over the next 5 games though. The game in Tally might be ugly, but the other 4 games are all winnable. 5-7 would be a much better position, but we have a pretty steep hill to climb to even get there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can't just gloss over the loss to GT

Jan 20, 2017, 8:58 AM

GT stinks and yet we will still probably finish below them.

If we had not finished the game on a 15-0 run @ Wake, Clemson would have zero ACC wins right now. We might have been unlucky to lose to UNC or GT, but we were also lucky to beat Wake.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Losing at home to GT would be really bad. Losing on the road

Jan 20, 2017, 9:02 AM

to GT is something that happens to average ACC teams. When i looked at our schedule to start ACC play i was worried that a 2-4 or even 1-5 type of start was fairly likely to happen just due to the strength of the teams we were playing to start the season. When your best opportunities to win are two road games (Wake and GT), that's not good.

This team is better than last year's team, unfortunately the majority of the ACC improved even more than we did.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are incrementally better. We have improved offensively

Jan 20, 2017, 9:04 AM

and regressed defensively and in rebounding from a what was already a low bar.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So after 7 years, winning a game in Atlanta

Jan 20, 2017, 9:04 AM [ in reply to Losing at home to GT would be really bad. Losing on the road ]

when you are favored by 9 points is too much to ask?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Look, I'm not trying to defend BB here.

Jan 20, 2017, 9:24 AM

I don't think our problem is really coaching though. We aren't performing that much below expectations. That problem is our roster. It's recruiting. Not that that's shocking to anyone news to anyone, but that is the challenge we are facing and I think there's more to it than just getting a new coach. The entire athletic department has done a fantastic job marketing Clemson as a football brand. We have to find a way to market basketball a lot better than we currently do. Obviously it's never going to be on the level of football, but it can certainly improve a lot from where it is now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is a distinction without a difference.

Jan 20, 2017, 9:30 AM

We aren't recruiting well and the players we are recruiting are not being coached up or put in favorable situations through coaching.

A coach being paid millions must either be a good recruiter or a good teacher or some combination of the two.

What are the obvious strengths of this coaching staff? What is the one constant that Brownell teams can fall back on?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah. I'm not saying we shouldn't move on, I just don't

Jan 20, 2017, 9:43 AM

think a new coach is necessarily a magic bullet. We have more things limiting recruiting than just the coaching staff. The next guy is, sadly, pretty likely to fail as well. That's not to say we shouldn't try, but we really need somebody young and personable that can get out there and try to sell Clemson. There's talent 2 hours away from us, but we never manage to land any of it. I think I would rather hire somebody with charisma that is likely to be a good recruiter and just hope they can coach well enough. It's not like OP was a great game coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are seeing that Coach Brownell is not the game coach

Jan 20, 2017, 9:50 AM

so many said he was. Couple that with his inability to recruit talented basketball players and this is what you get. Coach Purnell may not have been a great game coach, but he got us into the tournament 4 years in a row with a system that was much more fun to watch than the current one. I don't really see a "system" or set of guiding principle with this coaching staff that we can build upon.

We can do better. Much better.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hate it, but I have to disagree on the coaching aspect.

Jan 20, 2017, 9:59 AM [ in reply to Look, I'm not trying to defend BB here. ]

We've shown a consistent pattern during Brownell's tenure of not being able to finish off games, and not being able to finish off seasons. I can't put that responsibility squarely on the players. It's the head coach's job to have his team mentally prepared to win, and the coach's job to put them in position to win. The rash of turnovers, poor defensive execution, sometimes obscene shot selections - in closing minutes of far too many contests has become maddening.

As a floor leader, Brad is simply too uptight IMO, and our play seems to reflect that.

I've believed in Brownell and gave him the benefit of the doubt up until the mid-way point last season - that's a lot of years of having faith. Unlike most views on here, I feel like he's recruited well, considering our circumstances. Unlike Dabo's mistake-filled early years, Brad doesn't seem to be learning from them and improving, thus I don't believe more time is the answer.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We were favored over GT by 9 points.

Jan 20, 2017, 9:00 AM [ in reply to The scary thing is that we really haven't lost any games ]

At some point you have to exceed the very low expectations in order to improve.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, but 2-4 was probably a reasonable expectation

Jan 20, 2017, 9:04 AM

to start this season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we did not improve from last year, yes, that would be the

Jan 20, 2017, 9:08 AM

expectation going in. If, however, you are looking for signs of something more than incremental progress after 7 years, then the expectations would be to win some more of those games and certainly avoid the GT loss.

Keep in mind that, had SC had their best player on the floor, we would have lost that game. Losing to your rival three years in a row creates a different vibe at this point. Also, Louisville was missing one of their best players in their point guard.

We were fortunate.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

See my post above. I'm not defending BB, i just don't think

Jan 20, 2017, 9:26 AM

this is really what should have everyone upset. The writing was kind of on the wall that this was going to happen. Nothing that has happened in these 6 games has shocked me at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, if he makes the NCAA's he will stay.
