I’m conflicted between 2018 vs 1989

Major Harris was better than Charlie Ward, no debate about that.
I still can’t let the 89 defense go about being the best of all time.

We should’ve had Tony Rice at QB that year. The first conflict between Danny and the admin. They wouldn’t admit Rice but somehow N. Dame did.
Rice was the second best option QB I’ve ever seen only behind Tommie Frazier.

ACC rules kept Tony Rice out

No PQs at that time. ACC relaxed the rules when FSU joined.

Tony Rice came out of Woodruff HS in upstate SC, coached by Willie Varner, who ironically grew up in Gaffney, but went to Spartan High, and then Wofford, where he played football and ran track. National and SC hall of Famer in several categories, and also received the "Order of the Palmetto", the highest civilian award in SC. And the town of Woodruff is a very small place in the middle of nowhere on rt. 221, just a little south of Greenville, and a little south east of Spartanburg.
Just sayin'... Go Tigers!!!

BTW, Robert O’Neal might be the most underrated player in our modern era.

Ward. But hard to argue against that 89 defense for best of all time; loaded with studs.

Ward was a much better passer. At the time no one had ever seen anything like Major Harris, he changed the way programs recruited QB’s.

The ACC was a good conference in Danny's days with Clemson, Carolina and Maryland all national powers. We need to get back to having conference games that are competitive. I am not sure about this but I think the year after the Maryland game that Danny pitched a fit, we went to Maryland and the game was in the old Colts stadium. I think that was the game that both coaches were in the booth because they were suspended for the game. Maryland trashed us that day.

show, he said Frazier was such a stone cold lock to Clemson that he would walk naked from Columbia to Clemson if he didn't commit to the Tigers. He ended up at Nebraska of course...
Tony Rice is another story... I'm sure there are people here who remember how he ended up at Notre Dame. I'll just say - Lou Holtz was head coach at 5 schools, and all 5 ended up on probation...

I think b/c we didn't have firepower on offense that year, the Defense got overshadowed.....but 2014 is in the Top 3 of all time. Easily.
They finished the season #1 in the country in several Defense categories (Including total Defense, Points, Yards per carry, yards per play, yards per game, first downs).
Statistically speaking, that was the best Defense we've ever fielded.

Yeah 2014 belongs in the conversation. Seems like they were put behind the 8 ball every big game.

We were at the Gator Bowl when we played West Virginia and once we finally hit Major Harris and their lone knew they could not block us, the game was over. There is no substitute for a pass rush.

That ‘89 defense was a bunch of merciless, vicious headhunters with great speed. Major’s mom had good reason to be concerned. That was a special group. And those were different times.

I don't know if you guys remember, but after Danny's outburst (GIVE EM H$%^! DANNY) he got banned from the sideline for next years Maryland game. Somewhere during the season Ross got banned too. I believe we played in Baltimore the next year (I remember having bottles thrown at me), for their home game, and it may still be the only game in history where BOTH HC's were in the booth and not on the field.

Can’t forget about the 1990 defense either, pitched three shut outs and was ranked number one in the nation at one point during the season. Held UGAy to a field goal. If it weren’t for Georgia Tech’s miracle fluke season, that team would’ve won the ACC and finished in the top five probably.

A very SALTY Bunch that was littered with future NFL Players. In my opinion, they were just as good (if not better) than the 1989 and 2018 units.
