ACC looking at unequal rev shares

Jul 5, 2022, 4:48 PM

This is getting serious look as best chance to hold all members thru 2035 GoR expiration.
Clemson would get X times payout compared to BC for example to be based on undefined formula likely tied to tv and streaming numbers.
Big 12 played with similar to placate U of Texas but couldn’t get smaller schools buy in- so they ok’ed Longhorn Network to boost UT revenue. Didn’t work out so they walked to SEC.
Desperate times lead to desperate actions.

Though that may be good for us in the short term, it will make the lesser teams even weaker which is not good for the conference or us long term.

Not interested. That's a poor long-term solution IMO as per the Big 12 example with Texas. Clemson would have to get ± double the amount to make it equitable.

Just heard Roddy Jones say on Sirius 84 he didn't think there is much schools (like CLEM) could do until just a "few years left to go in the GOR." He's towing the company line there and its wishful thinking.

My fear is that he is right. Back when GOR was done, I remember reading it was well written and would be very hard for any school to get out of it. One question is whether ESPN wants us in the SEC enough to help finance our exit of the ACC.

Seems like all conferences should do something like this. It makes no sense for the little guys to equally benefit from the top few teams successes.

Power 2 conferences excluding everyone else from their playoff? A lack of path to the playoff is as big an issue as the lack of money. And the hit we will take in recruiting for being a perceived lower group of conference is a big issue as well.
The only way the ACC is suitable is if Notre Dame joins in full, the contract is renegotiated, and there's an equal path to the playoff as the BIG and SEC. That is not going to happen.

ACC looking at all options is probable.

We hope but history has shown us that this is an area where the ACC leadership does not excell.

The ACC and Pac 12 screwed themselves when the voted no to the 12 team CFP.

What would Clemson get an extra million or two? That would be a joke compared to the SEC and B1G.

I agree. This would be a foolish attempt at holding all members thru 2036 contract expiration that would make CFP selection more difficult as victories against “low dollar” conference opponents less valuable.
Swofford still lives.
