ACC considering changes

Jan 10, 2014, 12:01 PM

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10273908/acc-commissioner-john-swofford-favors-title-game-qualifying-redo

I think the ACC should seriously think about scrapping divisions. You roll through the entire ACC on a rotating schedule, then the top two teams play.

It eliminates the problem of a lame championship game and the problem of divisional powers fluctuating.

this again?

Jan 10, 2014, 12:12 PM

please no

ACC officials will meet later this month, and will also continue to discuss whether the league will play eight or nine conference games, ...

Yeah I like the idea of changes to the championship game but

Jan 10, 2014, 12:26 PM

we will ready need that extra boost from a game with a team outside the ACC (UGA, LSU, TN, OK, Oregon, etc.).

It helps when they make these selections to these playoff games. It is not going to be just the conference title champion but other strong teams in the league based on schedules.

Probably why we don't have any future home and home games scheduled past Georgia next year. The dept wants to see wants to happen with conference scheduling before committing to travel to another school.

the conference will never be relevant if we play too many conference/divisional games, period.

the championship game should be of the best 2 teams in the ACC period, regardless of division or at least have a fail-safe added against flukes. something should be done about that (it obviously hasn't worked on several occasions) & repeats of some of these ACC "champs" games would be counterproductive & asinine for the conference nationally speaking moving forward, because it determines more-so who plays in the playoffs & big bowls

we need to all be able to play at least 3 OOC games & whom each team plays in the conference divisions needs to rotate some to work & it's impossible to play them all, but not playing an ACC team for 5-9 years is silly. then it's like they aren't in the conference at all if you rarely ever play.

i like having set opponents in division & cross-division, but that may have to change for the big picture to be even for all in the conference.

Re: agreed...fsu turn in your trophy

Jan 10, 2014, 1:50 PM

no, not what was said. but we need diversity & playing big-time ooc opponents was the point, such as the SEC & PAC12, etc... we can't only hope that beating all our ACC brethren will be enough to garner us the respect & attention we need in the new playoff system.
if we play every team in the ACC & all the weaker ones every year instead of competition that does play other teams nationally, then unless the ACC seriously improves the smaller & lesser programs, we doom ourselves.

we should mix it up enough that when we handle our business, it gets us in a playoff game.

To all Gamecocks lurking

Clemson has had 5 undefeated seasons in football. What is all this talk about 11 wins? Teams did not play 12 regular season games until recently. Undefeated seasons are what matters. They will add another game soon and people will be talking about first team to win 14 or 15 games. Doesn't matter if you win 11 or 12 or whatever. Try to be undefeated 5 times and then you can put yourself in a conversation with the mighty paws. Until then you are just crowing about the sun coming up every day. Nothing special. ROAR !!!LOL !!!!!!!

This will bite Clemson in the end.

Jan 10, 2014, 1:06 PM

If the SEC goes to that format the possibility that two of their teams will be selected for the playoffs goes sky high while the possibility that a one loss ACC champ makes the grade will drop like a rock.

I know Swaffie is looking at the magnitude of have our two best face each other for the revenues that brings. Slive is likely to go along for the same reason but Slive knows he gains advantage with the SEC's SOS.

Furthermore...

a loss by an $EC team to another $EC team is often diccounted, overlooked or completely excused.

spot on!
hate the SEC hype but the have history on their side.
our ACC champs game should be just what it's called & not less. that alone will bring more revenue & eyes towards the ACC.

I have NO confidence in the ACC....

Jan 10, 2014, 1:20 PM

If given the opportunity, I firmly believe they would come-up with something that only made matters worse.

Worries me too. We could have seasons where we don't play

Jan 10, 2014, 1:43 PM

FSU and GT regular season(our best rivals and teams from areas we heavily recruit. Could really screw recruiting.

i'd hate to lose those important match-ups too...GT needs to get better to strengthen how the ACC is viewed as well, don't even need to mention VT & Miami...
