League Notes
ACC weekend action included visiting North Carolina’s sweep of Florida State in a matchup of ranked teams … Virginia Tech also picked up three conference wins, sweeping its home series with Boston College … Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pitt and Wake Forest were other series winners … Louisville and Clemson continue to share the top spot in the Atlantic Division with 10-2 league records, two games up on Wake Forest … North Carolina (9-3) holds a three-game lead in the Coastal Division over second-place Pitt and Virginia Tech.
Six ACC teams are ranked this week, with three in the top five in the country … Louisville is the unanimous No. 2-ranked team, while Clemson and North Carolina are both ranked as high as No. 4 …Florida State, Virginia, and Wake Forest also hold spots in the polls.
UNC’s sweep was its first over FSU since 2002 and the first in program history over the Seminoles in Tallahassee … The Tar Heels entered the weekend with a 7-22 record at #### Howser Stadium since Florida State joined the ACC … UNC used another pitching gem from ace J.B. Bukauskas to take the opener, then won the second game of the series in the 11th after being no-hit through the first 8 2/3 innings … Michael Busch – whose game-tying single broke up the no-hit bid – then delivered a two-run homer with two outs in ninth inning on Sunday to lift the Tar Heels to a 9-7 win in the series finale.
Virginia Tech pushed the winning run across the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning of Sunday’s 4-3 series finale against Boston College to register its 13th walk-off win under fourth-year head coach Patrick Mason (eighth against an ACC opponent) … At 6-6, the Hokies have matched their second-best start in conference play (2010, 2015) … The 7-5 start in 2013 is the best mark after 12 ACC games.
Connor Johnstone tossed his second complete-game shutout of the season as No. 29 Wake Forest clinched the series over Miami with a 9-0 win at Mark Light Field on Sunday afternoon … Wake Forest has now won its first four ACC series after previously getting the best of NC State, Duke and Georgia Tech …It marks the program’s best ACC start since winning six straight ACC series to open the 2002 season, a year the Deacons hosted an NCAA Regional.
Keyed by a grand slam and three-run homer by Reed Rohlman, Clemson scored all of its runs in the first three innings of Sunday’s 13-6 series-clinching win at Georgia Tech … Rohlman led the Tigers’ 14-hit performance by going 3-for-5 with two homers, a double, three runs, a walk and seven RBIs, the most by a Tiger since John Hinson had seven RBIs against USC Upstate on April 21, 2010.
The ACC midweek schedule includes several intriguing nonconference matchups and rivalry games … Georgia Tech visits No. 13 Auburn on Tuesday night, while Clemson makes a quick return to the Peach State to face Georgia in Athens … Louisville puts its 17-game home field winning streak on the line against No. 12 Kentucky, while North Carolina plays host to East Carolina … Pitt plays host to Penn State, while Notre Dame travels to No. 19 Michigan … Florida State hosts two games against No. 17 Florida Gulf Coast.
