My Dad was a Wofford graduate from Union County, SC, but he was the man who made me a Tiger fan. His younger brother Rob graduated from Clemson in engineering, and the Duncans have always been Clemson people. Dad loved Danny Ford, and got to enjoy those great years. He would have so enjoyed seeing the heights that Dabo has taken our Tigers to. As we stand on the verge of another season, I would dearly love to be talking with him about our vaunted Tigers’ football prospects in the months to come.
30 years ago today (September 3, 1992) my father died. I’ve missed him every day for almost half my life now. I love you, Dad.
In the dedication of my PhD Thesis, I wrote:
“In Memoriam J. Ligon Duncan, Jr. (1925-1992) Eighth-generation Southern Presbyterian, Ruling Elder, Kind and Beloved Father, Follower of Christ”
To my family, I wrote: “Father did not live to see the end of this toil, and I for one live now with a certain awkward loneliness in this world, but his body awaits the resurrection in the red soil of South Carolina and his soul rejoices even now in the presence of the Savior. We all await the reunion.”
Tell your Dads that you love them today. And, Go Tigers!
