Snek poll
May 5, 2022, 2:46 PM
|

Going off 19B's Find the Evil Demon Spawn Copperhead in the Leaves post yesterday, a lot of snake pics are popping up in our neighborhood Facebook page and of course, people are arguing to kill or not to kill if venomous.
What's your philosophy if a copperhead, rattlesnake, cottonmouth, Alabama black snake, etc. comes creepin' into your yard or if found out and about in the hood? Not in the bum #### woods, but actually in areas where kids/dogs/etc. play and even in your backyard.
A. I will avoid it or relocate it and advise/educate others to stay away. Live and let live. Kumbaya! B. It dies. Now. With fire. C. I'm FBCoach and I now have a new pet.

Non-venomous - Live and let live
Venomous - dead. Not just to protect me, but to possibly protect someone else, a kid, a pet, etc.

I caught a black rat snake yesterday

about 5' long I would guess. He was in my chicken house with an egg about 3" down his gullet. He was in no shape to fight or flee.
I scooped him up, dog cussed him for eating one of my eggs. Then I did something I always wanted to do - I broke the eggshell with it inside him. Just squeezed it until it broke. It was pretty cool. Then I slung him into my pond.
He swam right straight back to me. He wasn't real happy with me, but he did come right back up to my feet. So I picked him back up and took him all the around the back of my pond, then let him loose into the woods, in a tree with low hanging limbs actually.
That was his one warning. I catch him back in my chicken house and he's done.

it went straight down. I just sped up the digestive process.
It's lucky I didn't strangle it for being in my chicken house eating my eggs. I have baby chicks in the coop too that fortunately he didn't get to and kill/eat (which they have done in the past).
Snakes need to stay away from there.

Didn't kill it, but I gave it a firm warning to stay TF out of my chicken pen.
I shot one with birdshot once and used a hoe to cut it in half and press 3 young Guinea keets out of its tummy. They was ded.
Ifin I find a poisonous snake, it's a goner. That's a no-brainer. A non-venomous snake will get a pass most of the time, unless it really scares the crap out of me, or it's in a very obtrusive place, and seems likely to re-appear once moved (chicken pen, garage, storage shed, in my house, etc.)

kill it, anywhere else I will. I'll typically try to leave a rat snake alone unless it starts wanting to get on the porch or something like that. Copperheads are most prevalent where I'm at, already seen several this year. They usually die a savage death via tree limb.

man who isn't scared of sneks (unless the situation calls for it).
1. Identify Snek
2. Is Snek venomous? Y/N
If N: Snek keeps snekking
If Y: Proceed to 3
3. Is Snek a copperhead?
If Y: probably trap in bucket and relocate a block away, UNLESS it struck at me, in which case, proceed to 4
If N: Proceed to 4
4. Snek no keep snekking.

Non-venomous and in the yard then I'm happy to see it.
I've never seen a venomous snake in my yard, plenty of the good ones.

About 10 years ago my neighbors on either side had moles. Both elected to use deterents rather than to kill them. I ended up with moles and had to do what they were scared to do.

those FB people want to relocate all venomous snakes, but in the next sentence they say how they love king snakes (or whatever) cause they kill copperheads. LOL.
But, the SC FB page has got me pretty good on identifying copperheads - I still have issues with the cotton mouth vs banded water snake.

I hate those bastages and we have a small creek running beside our neighborhood, and they flock there in the hot months. We live about 100 yards from it, and we will catch a few during the summer. Watched my 66 year old neighbor kill one last week.
