A quick thought on the running game..

Nov 17, 2014, 9:51 AM

I stumbled upon the 2005 game against Texas a&m this morning, where a similar issue arose that we have seen now twice this year. Starting qb goes out of the game and the backup has to come in who is obviously of a lower talent level (stoudt and proctor). However, back in 2005 we lined up with 8-9 people in between the hashes, and handed it off to our big backs and consistently got 3-4 yards carry to sustain some drives and put up some points regardless of the quarterback.

I feel like now we just can't do that, and it's a combination of running backs, o-line, and the scheme we run with the spread. I'm not sure how we will go about fixing this, and am hoping that with guys getting healed this offseason and good o-line recruiting we can get it fixed. However, I worry about how elite we can really be until we get a reliable running game back, and I certainly know that isn't going to happen anytime this season sadly...

James Davis

If we had him this year, our running game would be fine.

I am not sure what it is, but there is something about

our offense that is pretty frustrating with respect to the back-up QB. I have not seen another team have this much of a drop-off when the back-up goes in. Sure you would expect some, but the last 5 weeks are pretty absurd. (granted 4 were good enough for wins - but remember we are supposed to be "playing to a standard" now.) FSU has beaten us a couple times recently with their back-up QB. The Chickens have done it at least once, seems like Thompson played a good bit in one of their other wins...

But the other things that is odd - wasn't it Cole that played a good but of the MD game a couple years ago when Boyd was hurt? Seems like he moved the team well (of course he had Sammy and Ellington.)

I know Morris has commented before that he can only get 1 QB ready at a time. Maybe that is the problem. I think Spence used to say the same thing...

I just don't think it has anything to do with scheme. We could easily go with 2 TE's and a FB. It has everything to do with injuries.

Last spring, if I were to name our top 3 RB's, u would have said Brooks, Dye, and Wayne. Turns out Chouce was a good one too, but only 1 of those 4 have been available. The O-line had been a disaster. Having only 1 or 2 subs for the whole line is absurd. For the record that's not a recruiting problem. You shouldn't come into any season with 4 game ready O-lines... It just isn't logical.

There it is... that is a reoccuring issue

people will say "we had James Davis, etc.." But that's the point, isn't it? We are self-described as a "smashmouth spread" offense. Why can't we get elite RBs to come play here? Tyshon Dye is the most true "RB" that Morris has landed.

We have a big problem when our run game is so dependent on our freshmen QB. He is an excellent runner, and should absolutely be used in the run game. But we should not struggle like we do when he goes down.

IMO, this is where Morris differs from Malzahn. Chad has tweaked his system away from Gus enough that it has really effected our run game. The numbers back that up.
