the first round of the playoffs played the week after (or maybe 2 weeks) the conference championships. Then we'd have a few weeks for the two final teams to rest/prepare. Bama getting an extra week off and then a few weeks to fume/heal certainly did us no favors.

not an awful idea. now to this year - if you want to win a championship you line up and find a way to beat people. they did. we didnt.

championship game when we crushed them in the playoffs so I don't buy into the "extra week off" garbage. Furthermore, a few weeks to heal is how it should be. Let the teams decide who should move on while at full strength.
There's no reason to change anything about the playoffs, it is working to perfection.

I'm not sure either of those teams needed the time to heal like Bama did. I'd rather see the two top teams have a few weeks to heal than all four contenders. Plus it would give my bank account time to heal between the playoff games and the NC game.
Biggest problem I see would be the CFP semi's might be dimished and would feel less than the NY day bowls if they were held in mid December.
I agree that it has worked out pretty well so far. I believe that we are headed toward a 6-8 team playoff at some point.

The shorter you make that period between conf championships

and the semi-finals the more of an advantage it becomes for a team making the playoffs who didn't have to play in a conf champ game.

I completely agree with this. It makes no sense that you have 4 weeks to prepare for the game that gets you to the Championship game. AND the week before the game is a big holiday where most teams send guys home to be with family. Then you get only 7 days to prepare for the biggest game of the year. It is really the only problem I have with the play offs. With BCS you actually got an extra week than other bowl teams to prepare. Maybe they think people during that time are too busy to pay attention and might not travel well because people like to take the week after Christmas off??

re your proposal, Alabama would still have had one extra week of preparation because they did not participate in a conference playoff.

Mark packer had an excellent Idea. Move the Army Navy game up 1 week, move the conf. championships back 1 week. Then 2 weeks after the conf. championships play the semi-finals, then 2 weeks after that play the NC game.

4 weeks off before their semi-final game, whereas we would have had 2 weeks off. I don't see that as being an excellent idea.

closer to the regular season. It's a tale of two seasons. One, the regular season, is characterized by week in and week out adjustments to different teams and injuries and fatigue. The other, the postseason, is characterized by a month long hiatus. It makes no sense and you really have a regular season that highlights different traits than a championship playoff of 2 games in a week. It draws no parallels to basketball b/c they play consistently right after the season ends.
The first round should occur a week or two at max after the league championships and the second round a week or two at max after that. There is then continuity in what makes top 4 teams during the season actually the top 4 teams a month later.
I know logistically that could be tough but, who cares. The bowl games wouldn't like it at all.

With prolonging the season for several weeks and forcing the season to be a part of two semesters. Many administrators would say that 14 15 games is too many for the student athletes. I compare that the with the NBA.The pro basketballers seem to play until mid summer before they choose a winner.
How about starting the season in late August?

I can’t recall a final four that wasn’t exciting games. We have had a win or two that wasn’t close, but for the most part, the final has been unbelievably great. Which team in the last four years didn’t deserve to play for the championship? FSU, Bama, UGA, Clemson? It is my opinion that the selection committee has done a fantastic job.

extra week off and played one less game which is an advantage. An advantage they got by finishing second in their division and not having to play for a conference championship. I'd rather have played them (or whoever) mid December and then had (2) weeks to prepare for the championship game. This would certainly upset the bowls.
