Question for you. Why do we even have time zones?

7

May 25, 2023, 7:46 PM

why not just let it be the same time everywhere?

Ok, at noon, the sun may be just rising somewhere, but so what?

I mean, you'd still have to remember that it's 3 hours

behind us to work with California, timezones at least make that easier to know? Not sure of the reason and too lazy to google.

Sure, but a 1 pm meeting is 1 pm everywhere.

True, but you make a 9am meeting and have people working

from Alaska on the call...they won't be happy with *their* 9am meeting.

(Assuming our 9am is the current EST 9am)

They are already unhappy.

I understand where they came from and until

3

May 25, 2023, 8:19 PM

railroad schedules came around, Noon in NY might be off from noon in Philly or Baltimore - it did not matter.

But with DST not only do you need to know how many time zones are from NY to LA, you need to know are they both on DST? Arizona is the worst I guess. Sometimes it is 3 hours sometimes it is 2 hours difference from SC.

So just get everyone on the same time. Yes, you need to know your team in California does not get to work until 11 am but with computers and scheduling software, this is a non-issue imo.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So instead of getting rid of time zones, how about getting rid of daylight savings time?

2

May 25, 2023, 8:28 PM

I’ve been for that since I became a parent. It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of and then actively participated in against my will.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I say wipe the slate clean period. It is 1 pm here and

2

May 25, 2023, 9:21 PM

everywhere at the same time.

Think about it.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-fatherg-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Umm. It’s 9:32 here.

2

May 25, 2023, 9:37 PM

And even though everything else in my house is breaking, my clocks still work. We just won our time, cause it’s bed time and it’s getting closer to the movie we want to see. Changing our scheduled timetable would involve humans showing a lot of humility and willingness. That might not happen. And admitting error, it’s tough to do. Maybe we can just knock an hour off of our day instead.

Time zones are something that you really dont concentrate on

until you live in a place really close to a time zone boundary, like Chattanooga. It was very confusing living there to me, was ALWAYS aware of time changes, it affected your every move. You can live in one zone and work in another. Very odd.

There are a few town on the Alabama/Georgia line which are

Global conference call once a month at 8:00am EST. Made the call at 2:00CET (Italy/Germany), 9:00PM in Shanghai,8:00PM in Bangkok and (I think) 7:00PM in Mumbai.

It was the only time that worked. I got the best deal living in Richmond.

Then there's a thing called the "Julian Calendar"...

If one were to really be so inclined, time is a good start for wasting the very thing that's being discussed.

May 25, 2023, 8:36 PM

We should set the entire Earth to North Pole Standard Time (NPST). Since we all know the the earth is flat, the time would be the same at both the south and north pole. Therefore, the time would be the same across the whole disk world.

Before you ask, I picked NPST because that's where Mrs. Claus lives. I kinda got a thing for her.

was supposed to be the standard but it never really caught on.

Lulz-was swatch invention apparently

Actually, even Standard time is a recent invention.
