A Lesson from History

Mar 8, 2022, 10:56 AM

Back in the 30s, the United States and other western nations imposed sanctions and embargoes on Japan. The Japanese leadership took this as a cutting-off of Japan from the rest of the west (they wanted to be seen and accepted as a "western" nation). Resulting difficulty to get fuel and other natural resources resulted in their plan to take the western Pacific by force, particularly the oil and resource rich islands of Indonesia. The attack on Pearl Harbor wasn't so much done as a direct attack on the United States (they knew they'd never conquer the US), but a means of ensuring that the US Navy didn't interfere with the Japanese plans to occupy and take over the western Pacific and all that it encompassed - Indonesia and the Philippines, particularly. We know how all that ended.

Point being - while the sanctions can be an effective means of retaliation, they create their own problems. It creates a cornered animal who feels like the only escape is to attack and lash out, regardless of the details about how they came to be cornered. They're purely reactionary. They don't learn from experience. They only react to events.

Not saying we shouldn't implement the sanctions we've implemented - we should, but saying that we need to beware and be cautious that these sanctions may be creating a cornered animal and to be prepared for that animal to lash out to escape.

Putin will not admit he is wrong. He will not withdraw from Ukraine. His only goal is to occupy it and he will not compromise on that. His goals are firm and non-negotiable. As long as he is in power, the west and NATO needs to be extremely cautious, and it looks like we're doing that. This is going to be a long, crazy ride. Only a change in leadership will take the pressure out of this situation.

out of Ukraine. He is destroying a sovereign country, killing civilians, and the world is standing by and watching.
