inspired by Aero's post: Worst thing you ever burned up?

Apr 14, 2022, 10:54 AM

presumably in the back yard trash pile*.

*note: If you burned down a house or car or boat, we'd love to hear about that too.

I once burned an entire set of living room furniture (old couch, chairs) and mattress/boxsprings, because I was moving and didn't want to tote them with me or haul to the dump. And they weren't in any condition to donate to Goodwill with a good conscience.

Just had to take the leftover metal pieces, springs etc. to the dump, which fit tidily into my truck bed.

I seem to remember some couches being burned at a party on Hartwell's secret beach.

Local community pool went out of business and my dad

Apr 14, 2022, 11:17 AM

purchased the land since it was right across the street from our house. Unlike FBmoochSC's real estate deals, everything conveyed. So after we cleared off all this brush and trees around the area, we decided to have a bonfire in the kiddie pool with all of the big wood. Made a nice 4' tall teepee fire. Apparently whatever material the pool was made out of had some sort of air pockets. You'd hear a few little pops like some snap-n-pops going off. Then all of a sudden

Bigass chunk of it assploaded right beneath the fire sending flames and sticks ever where.

except it caught pine branches on fire. Unreal how fast and high the flames got. I understand how they can light up and burn a house to the ground much better now.

One year we burned our tree in the fireplace - we did cut

Apr 14, 2022, 12:01 PM

it into pieces but still it went up pretty good. We didn't realize how good until we hear banging at door and 80 yr old neighbor is standing there huffing and puffing, carrying a fire extinguisher and says flames are shooting out of the chimney.

I still burn the tree every year but keep it outdoors now.

I’ve only burned normal stuff like a set of golf clubs, Christmas trees, traffic tickets, yard debris and the like.

My first live in girlfriend did go a little overboard after finding out that I slept with her cousin after attending her uncles funeral though. I came home from my Thursday night bowling league to find all of my clothes, collection of Tiger game programs, baseball cards and 6th grade report card on fire in the carport. I was devastated and had to sleep in the back of my Datsun for two nights until she took me back.

To be honest, it was really weird. She cried while I was going at it and I didn’t know if it was because her dad just died or it was because I was doing it wrong. I was pretty young at the time and hadn’t really perfected my skills.

That my old roommates desert rat friend didn’t want anymore, and instead of trying to sell it, decided to drag it to our house in the middle of the desert to drink copiously and set it on fire.

Those old magnesium blocks get interesting after a while in the flames.

When I was 4 and one of my brothers was 7, I watched while he started a fire in a stack of old tires in our neighborhood. It got out of hand and someone's garage caught on fire and I, narc that I was, ran and got an adult. Thankfully the owner of the house wasn't too upset about it.

When I was in middle school, a friend of mine and I nuked a Sgt. Slaughter action figure in a cup of gasoline. We lit it and ran, but only the surface of the gas was burning, so I told my friend to poke it with a stick. He did it and the cup exploded. Sgt. Slaughter was never seen again.

Apr 14, 2022, 12:27 PM

Now as it turns out they stopped the draft the year before, so it really was not that big of a deal.

But it felt good doing it.

Lived in oak crest when a guy molotov cocktailed

Apr 14, 2022, 12:59 PM

An abandoned vehicle.

Worst I personally ever did was at about age 11, soaked a nerf football in gas and light it on fire in a field behind our house. As the field began to catch fire, I quickly realized that stepping on it to put it out didn’t have the intended effect of course. Never played with fire again after that.

Almost a house under construction...

Apr 14, 2022, 4:18 PM

there were some woods in a buddy's neighborhood. It was actually a vacant lot between an older house and a house under construction. Well, we started a little campfire because we were cool like that. And eventually we somehow discovered that throwing a pile of sawdust at a campfire make for some nice fireworks. So we commenced to making larger and larger fireballs. Which commence to setting some brush on fire. Which commenced to burning toward the house. Luckily the water line to the house was working, but as we got the fire quelled, some 60 year old looking dude (probably actually 30 given our relative age) came charging up the hill from the house on the other side of the "woods" and started screaming at us about arson. He was so winded and red faced from running up the hill that we managed a pretty easy get away.

Of course, it turned out dude was a doctor in my friend's dad's practice and had seen about 100 pictures of my friend. So we got busted anway.

water ski once back in the '70 and discovered it in the woods behind the house. Children's mother had taken it and beaten the gelcoat off both the ski and the boat. I burned one of her knee length boots and cut the legs off two of her fav pair of pants. A few more items got burnt that day but the $500/pair boots got the worst of it.

I prob don't qualify for this thread due to doing the burning in the front yard between the porch and the driveway. Tramp ran over my dog a few weeks later.

and inevitably started a few grass fires, as others have done. Never burned anything down of significance, as I recall. But damm we were stupid. Or crazy as hel1. Whichever. It's a miracle no one was seriously injured, just a few minor burns here and there...
