A few notes on The Ohio State fans (TL:DNR)...

Dec 9, 2013, 9:17 AM

As I have shared many times, I was not fortunate enough to be graced with the pleasure of growing up in a Clemson family. I cannot look back at my childhood and smile about memories of my dad taking me to Death Valley. Instead my dad took me to Ohio State games. I never did care for them...in fact they were my most hated team growing up, even though my entire family loved them, and all my friends loved them. However, I can look back on those experiences to provide this information...for those of you going to Miami feel free to print this out as a guide.

1. OSU has an unbelievable amount of fans. A few of those fans even attended OSU. For a school of about 800,000 undergraduate students, it's amazing that the fan to alumni ratio is probably about 300:1.

2. OSU fans know how to tailgate. It's a Saturday tradition in Columbus to pile in the car and drive to the stadium to set up their perfect tailgate in the closest parking garage. Heck, many fans even arrive more than an hour before kickoff! They are so dedicated.

3. When walking in a group, it is customary for one OSU fan to yell out "O-H!" and everybody and their brother is supposed to respond by yelling "I-O!" Keep in mind that most OSU fans are not that bright, so it is easy to confuse them by yelling out random letters, such as "T-Y!" or "F-U!"

4. A Buckeye is a nut. Female OSU fans wear necklaces and bracelets made of buckeyes. However, so do the men. It's ghey for the men to do it. Seriously, ghey. It infuriates them to no end when they're told they are wearing a cute bracelet or cute necklace.

5. OSU fans know how to get loud. When you sit in their stadium with more than 100,000 people in the stands, it's amazing how loud it gets. In fact, I'd even say they get quite a bit louder than the fans at Wallace Wade Stadium. Last game I went to was about 4 years ago and the fans around me were deafening when another OSU fan about 5 rows in front of us actually wanted to stand up during the game. That guy should've known it's football...a sport where fans are supposed to sit down and quietly enjoy watching their team of cheaters play.

6. OSU fans are proud of their traditions, including dotting the i, Hang on Sloopy, and underachieving with top talent. You want to make an OSU fan beam with pride...just mention Woody Hayes (they actually believe he wasn't bat crap crazy). Want to make them fall into a rage of fury...just mention John Cooper.

7. Finally, OSU fans love their players. Take Braxton Miller for example. He walks on water as far as OSU fans are concerned, especially since he just wins games. Unless he loses to MSU in the B1G Championship game, then OSU fans seem to eat their own. They are already calling for Kenny Guiton to start in the OB. They say things like Kenny G (yes they call him Kenny G...as if the buckeye bracelets aren't ghey enough) is a better passer, he has better vision, he's more selfless. If you're Braxton Miller, you're a God at the OSU, until you lose 1 game in 2 years, then you're no better than someone named Kenny G.

I will say for the most part, OSU fans are decent people. They will treat their opposing fans with respect, as long as you're not a Michigan fan. Truth is, if Clemson wins this game I will struggle to be a good sport and a good winner. If we don't win, I will have to fall off the grid for a while and ignoring every call and text from the 937, 513, or 614.

being born in the South. However, I have been blessed with the duty of carrying the Clemson message to cold, snowy Ohio. There is only one God's Country on this planet, and it's in upstate SC...not along the banks of the Olentangy or Scioto River where it's gray all year and the women wear hooded sweatshirts 365.

And, the Columbus sports radio hosts actually refer to backup QB Kenny Guiton as "Smooth Jazz". No, I am not making that up.
Columbus news last night interviewed some Ohio State guy in a bar about the Orange Bowl and he said, "I think we will crush them." I may not make it through the next few weeks up here, but I am trying my best to be quiet and stealthy...and hopefully after January 3, I can give this town a great big SCOREBOARD! I may even flip them all the bird...I can't get in trouble for doing that in Columbus! GO TIGERS!

It's also quite impressive how many grown men

wear jerseys to games. I'd put it somewhere around 90% of those in attendance. It helps their ghey necklaces stand out more.

Yeah whats up with that? I have friends that are Ohio State fans and they ALWAYS wear jerseys on Gameday... and I always make fun of them for dressing like little kids... or women... which come to think of it explains the necklaces.

Just a note on buckeyes ( the nut )

Dec 9, 2013, 10:03 AM

Several generations ago it was prevalent for men to carry a buckeye for good luck. One of my prized possessions is the buckeye my grandfather carried during WW I. He swore it protected him and got him through the trench warfare, and he was not from the Midwest, but Elko, SC

a bracelet or necklace. I've heard the good luck stories with keeping a buckeye in your pocket, but yours is a great one.
