Malaprops From Announcers......,

What are some of the funniest mistakes/stories you've heard from broadcasters, announcers, analysts?
Here's a doozy about Phil Rizzuto and Jerry Coleman......"My favorite broadcast story was when the Yankees were playing Cleveland in a doubleheader. Before the game, we were told Sam McDowell and Jack Kralick were pitching for the Indians," Jerry Coleman said of the mid 1960s broadcast.
"Phil and I were going on and on about how McDowell's control had gotten so much sharper. I think I said something about McDowell looking like a different pitcher. In about the fourth inning, the station called to say it was Kralick pitching the first game."
According to Coleman, they looked over to see Mel Allen, sick with disgust, his forehead resting on the console.
"He didn't come up for two minutes," Coleman remembered. "He realized what a disaster it was."
I'm surprised it took the station so long to tell them.
BTW, if you've never read it, "Voices of the Game" by Curt Smith is outstanding for all of you baseball buffs. Many great/funny stories about announcers from every team starting at the beginning of the radio era until the early 1990's. I don't know if it's been updated, but it is a terrific book.

I forgot to mention, the Rizzuto/Coleman story was from Carlo Devito's book entitled "Scooter."

Howard Cosell, Dandy Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford. They obviously had prep sheets which they referred to for various information throughout the broadcast.
Frank Gifford referred a couple of times to the fact that a particular player had played at "None College". Finally, Dandy Don could stand it no longer, and corrected him on the air, saying "It's NONE, Frank. He didn't GO to college."

The biggest screw up of all time had to be when Howard Cosell was doing MNF the night of September 5, 1983 & called Alvin Garrett a monkey....I was 16 and watching...I couldn't believe my ears & those 3 in the booth had to be getting their A$$es reamed because they said nothing....I imagine the producer had a stroke & was going off on them in their headsets

Toupee" on Monday Night Football. Cranky though he was, I always thought it was the interaction between he, Meredith, and Gifford that made those early years "The Golden Age" of MNF broadcasts. Nobody since has been as good. MNF was truly 'destination television" back then, just as ABC had hoped it would be.

I remember one of his favorite Burke kids was back to receive the kickoff and he said, “Back to receive the kick is #29, Deontae Wilder, prancing like a stallion.” He always added extra color and humor to his broadcast. He was known as “Sarge” and I suspect he remains a legend.

I’m a Cubs fan and Chip Caray was a Cubs broadcaster before he was a with the Braves. He and Steve Stone we’re doing the pregame analysis on the screen and Steve said “Chip, so and so (can’t remember the players name) doesn’t blow anybody”, referring to how well he saves games and Chip’s look was priceless but he kept this professionalism and Steve and he both did a great job to not bust out laughing. But you could tell they were fighting it.

Dizzy was the greatest ever. English teachers hated him! He could screw up any sentence with his terrible grammar. I grew up listening to him and his cohort Buddy Blatner. They were among the very first tv guys. TV in those days were great …. If you were a Yankees fan. They were on every game,

Another one from the '60s. Rizzuto and Mel Allen were doing a game at Yankee Stadium. Allen noticed a guy and gal hugging and kissing way out in the distant center field bleachers. Allen said, "Hey Scooter, look at these two. "He's kissing her on the strikes and she's kissing him on the balls." Dead silence for a few seconds and then Phil says, "It's just not your day Mel." Really surprising that Allen, one of the all-time great announcers, would botch it so badly.

When I went to middle school in Brevard N.C. we had a dude named Eagle Moss that played on our Varsity team....still the fastest guy that I have ever seen in person.
Our radio announcer was a great guy named Bill Norris...he could get very excited on air.
During one game we had the ball on our own 30 yd line. Eagle Moss took the handoff, cut outside to the right and started blazing down the sidelines.
This was the radio call from a very excited Bill;
"Eagle with the ball, cuts outside, and he's at the 35, the 40, the 45, the 50, the 55, the 60, the 65, the 70, the 75, the 80, the 85, the 90, the 95.....TOUCHDOWN...EAGLE MOSS !!!!!
I wasn't at the game but I was listening at home....almost crying from laughter. I don't think Bill ever realized what he had done.

and obvious. As a lot of us saw on tv and video in the 1978 Gator Bowl with a little over 2 minutes left and Clemson up 17-15 on OSU and the Buckeyes driving at about the Clemson 25, Art Schlichter threw the interception to Charlie Bauman who was tackled by Schlichter and 2 other Buckeyes on their sideline. As he was getting up, Bauman was grabbed and punched by Woody Hayes.
The following few minutes were extremely weird. The announcers, Keith Jackson and Ara Parseghian, said absolutely nothing about Hayes punching Bauman when everyone watching, including my naive 17 year old self at the time, saw what happened. They said several times afterward they didn't know what caused the fight that followed between the teams and pretended not to know why OSU got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play. A replay was also shown from another angle and you could see Hayes swinging and Jackson still supposedly didn't see anything. It was almost funny in it's absurdity.
It was obvious the announcers were covering for Hayes or themselves or both. Jackson was a likable announcer with comments like "big uglies" and ""whoa Nelly", but he lost a lot of credibility that day. Parseghian had been a assistant coach for Hayes at Miami of Ohio. You had to wonder how it would have been handled if a similar incident had happened on the opposite sideline.

I was watching that game with my father & a friend of his in our living room in Ohio Lol....I was eleven & I remember exactly what you are referring too...To me it was sort of surreal ...I told my dad that was Woody's last game...My hometown's favorite son played for Ohio State (Doug Donley) & was on the field ...I asked him about it once & he said he didn't see it because he was on the ground along the sideline with a cramp that seized up chasing down Bauman...
Simply an unforgettable night....If you read my profile it's the night I became a Clemson fan lol.....A little footnote....My wife was married once before & her ex father in-law was first cousin with Woody...She showed me pictures of a couple family reunions & Woody was there...For those that are curious she said he was an a$$hole Hahaha

there's an old Q & A between Earl Weaver and broadcaster John Miller where they are answering fan questions. Earl drops an F bomb so it never aired, but the kept recording. Earl just goes off. Sample.
John: "Earl, Mary from Aberdeen wants to know why the Orioles don't look for more team speed?"
Earl: "Team speed!?!? F team speed!!! Give me some big c..ks..ker who can knock the F'ng ball out of the park!!!"
It is obscenely hilaroius

I was unpacking some keepsakes recently and came across a baseball signed by 17 players and former players who were at a spring training game in 1963.
According to my research,, most were working as scouts or front office personnel.
But two of the top announcers of all time--George Kell and Jerry Coleman--signed this ball. Kell was a great player and announcers for the Detroit Tigers and is one of only 10 announcers in the Hall of Fame.
Coleman was a starting out as a Yankees announcer that year, learning from Mel Allen and Red Barber. In 2005 he was given the Ford Frick trophy in recognition of a lifetime of service to the Padres. There is 1 winner each year, so while he isn't a national voice and he's not in the HoF, he's one of only 43 recipients.

Kell and the incomparable Ernie Harwell did Tigers games for years. Back when radio was king. Scully with the Dodgers, Harry Caray and Jack Buck with the Cardinals, Mel Allen with the Yankees, before Scully, Red Barber in Brooklyn, Rosie Rosewald and Bob Prince in Pittsburgh, Jimmy Dudley in Cleveland, Jack Brickouse with the Cubs, later guys like Marty Brenneman in Cincy, Joe Tait in Cleveland, even Milo in Atlanta.

John Madden MNF:
John drawing on the telestrator to diagram a TD scoring run by the RB:
"As you can see here Frank, the play was designed to go in the B-gap, but the middle LB had that hole filled quickly. Great vision by the RB to recognize that and take it straight up the A-hole."
Frank Gifford immediately went to the sideline reporter. I could only imagine him dying laughing in the booth.

My wife and i used to listen to NPR in the mornings before school. Bob Edwards, who hosted Morning Edition for over 20 years, has had quite a career in broadcasting himself.
Well, their Friday morning sports report at 7:25 usually consisted of Bob interviewing the great Red Barber, who had retired to the FL Panhandle. (At the time I didn't know who Red Barber was.) Red got to choose the topics. I think Bob knew what an honor it was to have these conversations with a legend so he gave Barber a long leash, but sometimes he demonstrated youthful impatience to cut off the meandering and get back to news.
Bob's impatience hit another level on those days when Barber, who was also a part-time preacher, would rhapsodize on the beauty of Creation and quote Scripture verses extolling the wisdom of the Creator. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork!" Red would say. Bob would be silent and, in my imagination, seething at this violation of NPR policy.
Not really a malapropism, but an example of an announcer acting as a refreshingly loose cannon whose words really didn't hurt anyone. And in the middle of a depressing news show, to hear an old loquacious guy talking about the wonders of birds singing, flowers blooming, bees buzzing and the sun beaming hot in FL while Washington D.C. offered a drastic counterpoint in terms of weather, pace, sense of self-importance and happiness--well, Red Barber quickly rose up my list of favorite announcers I've never heard in action.

Red broadcast for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s and early 1950s and then switched to the Bronx to join Mel Allen doing Yankee games, forming one of the great one-two broadcasting teams in history. Later on they were joined by Phil Rizzuto and Jerry Coleman, two ex-players who would both go on to pave their way to broadcasting stardom.
