A few In depth concerns from yesterday and season...

Mar 11, 2021, 7:27 AM

Overall it’s been a good season, but things I see from yesterday are concerns.

Why did we not go to a zone defense if we couldn’t handle Issiah Wong and McGusty. The Miami Coach Laranega (spelling) said in his post game presser said that when they had a hard time against Clemson’s defense early they switched to have those guys on one side because they were their best one-on-one players and Clemson could not stop them.
Miami shot like 29 percent from 3 point range for the season. That was a big mistake by Brad. I would have at least tried zone to see what kind of effect it had.
Also, For the season and yesterday what happened to John Newman? I know he was injured early in the season, but he used to be a lock down defender on the best offensive threat, and showed a lot of offensive ability last year. Ever since right before he was suspended for a game, he went from this to a terrible defender, and no offensive ability. He continues to be in Brad’s doghouse and I see a potential transfer in the off season on the horizon.

You're right about Newman. Been wondering what was up. He must have some issue. At times last year he was the best player on the floor and he has potential.

Yes, I will be surprised if he comes back, unless Brad convinces him he will be one of the main cogs next season, but don't see that with him way down on the bench.

Watch Miami get beat down vs that zone defense of theirs.

Looks like he is a very good student. Received academic honors. He should get that Clemson degree.

Thought Newman3 would be a significant part of the team this year. His game has really disappeared. Didn't hear what effect his injury had on it, but the last several games he looks to be in CBB's dog house playing about 6 or 7 minutes a game. Saw CBB jump his a couple of times a couple games ago when he came out even though didn't see any egregious mistakes. Other players making TOs weren't given any such attention. Began thinking then he would likely be gone after this season. He was one of the few who would take the ball to the lane for short jumpers, layups or passes to someone more open. Felt the offense ran better last season with him getting significant play.

the only good politician is a dead politician.

I agree about Newman.

He has not had a good year. He just never seemed to get into any sort of rhythm. Definitely a step back from last year. Early in the season, I thought it was because of his off-season injuries, but as the year progressed I saw that it wasn't.

Miami shot 38% from three yesterday, against our man-to-man defense. It would seem that their three point percentage would improve against a zone, not get worse.

Yesterday's game was weird in that we shot incredibly well on threes (12-23, 52.2%) and on free throws (6-6, 100%) but very poorly on twos (11-26, 42.3%). Our 15 turnovers didn't help, but Miami had 13 so that wasn't a significant discrepancy.

I thought we defended hard, but we obviously couldn't stop Wong, Walker, or McGusty. They each played outstanding games. They combined for 49 of their 67 points.

We have a lot we can improve upon from yesterday. I hope the loss came at a good time to help us refocus heading into the NCAA Tournament.

A zone can work as a change of pace....

Clemson is not going to go ‘all zone’ like Syracuse...but it’s reasonable to have one ready to go and give the other team something to think about at different times during the game.
And it’s not a done deal that a team will shoot better from 3 against a zone.
It seems that Brownell has employed an occasional zone in the past....but this particular team has not done so.
I think that the point some are making is that, when we are getting torched by someone...it’s OK to try something else defensively, even for a couple of possessions, to disrupt their rhythm. It might work, it might not.
I also think we have the ability to press, with traps, and be effective in spurts with it...but we wait too late in a game to do it. I know we pick up ‘full court’ defense....but there have been occasions where traps would make sense and we don’t typically attempt them. No one expects the ‘Purnell system’...but it’s about picking spots to take advantage of our depth and defensive ability.

BB is usually pretty good about going to something late like

Mar 11, 2021, 12:28 PM

a 1-3-1, or even a traditional even front. Didn't see that yesterday. Seems like we zoned them on one possession with about 10 min. to go, and they knocked in an uncontested 3.

BB's MO, and very effectively, has been to change things up in close games down the stretch to steal a few possessions, but we did not yesterday.
