A different perspective on Ed Cunningham

Oct 22, 2012, 11:31 AM

I don't really want to say I'm playing devil's advocate, because towards the end of the replay, I was about tired of hearing about Sammy Watkins' fumble and Logan Thomas' "sack" or whatever that was.

I think I've taken some understanding away from this Cunningham guy, though, because I know a few people exactly like him. I think we all do.

Ed seems to have a perfect storm of characteristics about him that make him hard to listen to for more than five minutes. First off, he is either extremely knowledgeable about football and its nuances or is completely full of hot air. I know commentators have free roam to analyze plays, but Ed takes it to a new level... for better or worse. In that regard, he can easily come off as a "know it all", case in point, when analyzing Nuk's touchdown that was ruled incomplete, he gave two or three points as to why Nuk was doing what he was doing, and I'd never even heard of those techniques. Past that, Ed tried to be an equalizer of sorts for this game, and since most of the horrid calls actually went our way, he tried to find something to fault us for to make up for the bad fortune of VT (ie Nuk "pushing off").

I think the biggest problem I have with Ed, though, is his fixation on calls he said should have gone one way but went the other. With the two fumbles ruled down that we committed, he spent way too much time analyzing why they shouldn't have been fumbles and what COULD have resulted from those fumbles instead of the plays at hand. This is somewhat unprofessional to me as a fan, because you aren't there to give me the run down on why you think a team has just been slighted and go over the possibilities of what will never happen. Sure, make a few comments. I'd be surprised if you didn't, but dang, let go after comment number 4!

Anyway, great win for us. Defense has got to find a way to improve on opponent's big plays (20+ yds) but I think they did better on third downs second half. Offense was slightly offensive, but off games happen.

Go Tigers, beat Wake

another thing about him

Oct 22, 2012, 11:35 AM

He tried his best to say there was pass interference on one of our DB's when it was completely obvious there wasn't!!

He went on and on about it and almost made it sound like that one call that wasn't even a real call completely hosed the hokies.

He is without a doubt a major looser!!

I got the angriest when he put on his Dr. Ed coat concerning Tajh's injury (or lack thereof).

COLLEGE: A three-year starter at strong safety for Clemson, finished his career with 234 tackles and 11 interceptions.

CUTigerDave is angry at life and Ed

I loved how he argued with himself

Oct 22, 2012, 11:37 AM

He kept telling VT to go for it on 4th down because "3 points wont beat Clemson".
When they went for it and got stuffed, he was quiet. But later, he said they messed up going for it and should've taken the FG.
What a dunce.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah especially when they were down 10 and got a FG

Oct 22, 2012, 12:13 PM

right before half to cut it to 1 TD. Also knowing they get the ball first in 2nd half. Guy is a moron

He won't shut up. Stop and breathe, Ed, and listen some.***

The OP makes good points about Ed and I agree with most of that.

Ed was fine to me. I ignore his ramblings and consistent praising of the VT team, and appreciate most of the diagnosis of the game. But I'm a 'detail' person too, so I appreciate it. I'm the same in that if you ask me the time, I'll tell you how to build the watch. Annoying to most, but appreciated by those that need that info. :) I hope - anyway.

For me - I'm okay with him. And the missed passing interference call on CLEMSON was indeed a missed call that went our way. I don't see how anyone can say anything other than CLEMSON reaped the benefits of the calls on Saturday. We probably did not need them, but they sure put the game away and we didn't struggle until the last minute with another weakazz team.

when is the last time we could say that? its about time!***

I'll admit there were things that he said that I didn't mind

Oct 22, 2012, 1:51 PM [ in reply to Re: A different perspective on Ed Cunningham ]

hearing... I too am puzzled as to why we didn't just put stoudt in at the end, as is a decent portion of tnetters on saturday.

I guess what I'm trying to say is he didn't exactly win a lot of people over by the way he commentated. Informative, probably... overbearing... probably.

2012_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem I had with Ed wasn't his obvservations...

Oct 22, 2012, 11:46 AM

...it's that he absolutely refused to...

Let Ed make the sammiches and let Heather Dimmich deliver them to your table....

wants to tell you about it, in great detail, nine times.
I really hope he doesn't call anymore of our games.

So, now we have 3 guys: Ed the announcer< ed the referee and ed the trainer.
