Backyard Bird Watcher

Jul 27, 2021, 2:37 PM

-- is my main job. Sitting on the porch with tunes, a cold adult beverage (beer), and my binoculars keeps me happy. Have the Clemson Spring game playing out here right now.

If you are like me, too often you take the birds you see every day for granted. I get excited seeing a new bird or one seen less. I often fail to see how truly beautiful and colorful something like a Cardinal is.

Here are two in the yard now - a Goldfinch (have a million all year) and a Red-bellied Woodpecker (seen many many times every day).
When you take time to notice these or most birds --> beautiful!

Still think the Painted Bunting is one of the prettiest, and there are many that frequent our yard.

All birds are interesting if you make time to notice.
Off my porch have IDed and photoed over 120 as the Savanna River is a flyway from the Blue Ridge. Great bird watching is in the Clemson area.

In the Upstate the Painted Bunting has been seen, but not by me. I believe I have seen the female, but maybe not. I see the Indigo Bunting often. I have seen and photoed PBs many times when camping at Huntington Beach State Park which is heaven for a bird watcher.

Very nice! Yesterday, bewilderingly, I made a 5-minute video of Red-Tailed Hawk sitting on my back stair railing making raptor like sounds. I could not believe it. I also have like 3 other 1-min videos because I was working just could not capture a whole 30-45 minute video...Even though I WFH, I don't like work interrupting my spectacular bird-watching.

Thanks for your pics.

The RTH was eating a baby hatching of Northern Mockingbird and so the mother Mockingbird was ineffectively darting all around the RTHawk. It did not care at all.

I miss my acreage out in Hartsville. I’d fire up my tractor to go bush hog my pasture and my local red tail would show up promptly. I started by cutting about 8 passes around the perimeter. Then I’d make a few passes through the interior and watch the show as the mice and rats ran out of the cover.

Like to watch them myself. Seen a few in the Darlington/Florence area for the first time in the last couple years. First was a Summer Tanager a few years back. Last year it was a Red Breasted Grossbeak. I really enjoy it when the hummingbirds show up each year.

A couple months ago, i had a Starling build a nest in a bush outside my house. She deposited 4 Carolina blue eggs there and it took about 2 weeks for them to break open. i watched the chicks grow for another 2 weeks, but one morning soon after, they were gone without a trace.

I had the covid this past march

Jul 27, 2021, 3:03 PM

very mild symptoms, but had to stay home for two weeks. didn't have a lot of energy, so I would sit on the back deck and be completely enamored with the birds on the bird feeder. Made a point to identify them, which was pretty easy with an Iphone and internet. Carolina Wren, Carolina chicadee, tufted tit-mouse, brown headed cow bird, house finch, goldfinch, and of course Cardinals.

Bird species in Florida are far more dangerous and should be avoided.

Sandhill cranes are monogamous. With the way they look, that is probably the wise play.

Lol. I have had to pull one off of a retriever more than once. They actually make goggles fitted for dogs to hunt cranes.

My Beagle helped me build a place off the deck high up in the trees where I sit.
I have it all in this tiny bird watching place -- beer freezer, computer, high end audio, and a great view of my yard and the Tugaloo River. In Winter with no leaves, can see Georgia from my chair.

Here I am on a game day:
