A bit of nostalgia...

Aug 25, 2015, 7:00 AM

It was 50 years ago this month that a punk 18-year-old kid from Rock Hill first set foot upon the Clemson campus with some fear and awe.

My Dad procured my one suitcase from the trunk and said, "Boy, you're here to study and get an education...and not to play around."

He shook my hand, I gave my Mother a quick kiss on the cheek and then heard an upperclassman yell, "Rat, come here!"

Thus began my 50-year love affair with our special place in the hills.

I loved my time at Clemson, for those four years afforded me the opportunity to expand my horizons, become acquainted with a whole lot of mighty fine folks and recognize and develop a few talents. The time gave me the chance away from parental control to think and act on my own, to make decisions, good and bad, that would influence the type of person I am today.

Most importantly, it taught me the importance of community...of being a positive contributor to community...of appreciating the freedom we enjoy of community.

Fast forward 50 years, and I recognize much of the same community right here on this website, for TigerNet is an extension of the same union of fellowship I enjoyed at Clemson. I appreciate the opportunity to participate; I appreciate the efforts of many of you to contribute. Most of all, the flames of passion for my Alma Mater burn as brightly today, as they did that long, long time ago.

GO TIGERS!!!!

You got me by a couple years (1967 for me). Turned out that was the last freshman class that "Rat Season" was mandatory. The first home game was 9/23 so it was also a long "season". Too bad that tradition died out.

in 1964 rat season went on until homecoming, the unc game I believe.somehow i didn't know beforehand that my head would be shaved and i would be wearing an orange rat hat once i got to campus(that's the place where the school physically exists for those of you from uscjr.)might not have decided to go to CU,but in retrospect i'm very glad that i did.wouldn't trade that experience along with living in the tin cans(D-603) for anything.one of the best choices i've ever made.

Re:Well said. Clemson is truly special

Arriving at Clemson in 1968 was awesome. My parents drove me the 720 miles from New Jersey and said to have a good time, study hard and don't come home with any little ones. What a great four years.

Now on the verge of retiring, my wife, ('69) and I want to live where our Clemson family enjoys their final years. Being able to see football, soccer, basketball, baseball and volleyball at Clemson is what we dream of doing. Can't wait to be where the blue ridge yawns its greatness.

I was in the early 70’s. Never saw any decent football as a student. After I left it got pretty good.

LOL.....It wasn't the first time that I had my head shaved,

Aug 25, 2015, 9:38 AM

for my Dad and most of my friends' Dads believed in the old G.I. haircut styles for us kids.

Had it shaved once again in the army, but haven't since...and won't...unless Mother Nature decides herself to derive me of my locks.

Point! Made me think - 40 years ago hiked up the steps to E5

Aug 25, 2015, 9:05 AM

Remember the words to Dylan's "Rainy Day Woman".

Well it didn't take long that afternoon. Maybe my old college buddies were bad influences on my academic endeavors .... Or vice versa? Well we made it through .... Mostly on schedule.

Fond memories.

Point! Made me think - 35 years ago hiked across the campus

Aug 25, 2015, 9:22 AM

from the parking lot (a commuter) to my first class.
I had grown up in the area and was familiar with the
campus, but was still a scared freshman. I had mostly
associated the campus with going to football, basketball,
and baseball games, playing on the practice fields, the
lake, the Y, the Ag sales, etc. as a youngster. It was
hard to change that focus.
P.S. Had to be like Tropical :)
