Paul Finebaum on CFB expansion

Apr 28, 2021, 8:53 AM

"We are definitely going to see an expansion before the end of this contract," Finebaum said Monday morning on WJOX-FM. "That was clearly the subliminal message from this release, Friday. When I first saw it, I got thrown off. By putting the 16 in there, you just said ‘there’s no way. They’re just playing games.’ The closer you read it, the more you thought about it, it makes sense. I think this is a conversation, really, about not only the College Football Playoff but about television. They’re sending a message. We are, at least, willing to have a serious conversation before the end of this contract. Because of that, they’ve opened the door."

A 16 team playoff would take at least 4 weeks to complete.

Of course, this is also after all of the conference championship games. So, if you have a 12 game season, a conference playoff game, and then go through a 16 team field for the CFP, how many starters are left for the title teams game? The teams in the title game would have played 17 games. The college football season would need to start in the third week in August and at least run through the month of January.

Forget the money for a minute, what is the likelihood of players going down to injury after game 15 or 16? I would say it is very likely. They will need to expand the football scholarship limit back to the previous 95 players on scholarship as opposed to the current 85 scholarship, just to have enough players to make it through a 17 game season.

Well...if you're the B1G, playing a truncated schedule...

but then getting credit for playing a full schedule is always an option.

Maybe this is the new model.

I think for a CFP, you are going to need a major "left out" school sitting at the #5 spot. And the only way I can see this if we have 5 undefeated conference champs/ND.

The best case for expansion was the '14 season with a B12 not picking a champ and 31-0 getting selected. If 31-0 did not win it all muting that issue there might be a case.

Otherwise, it would require something we saw back in the 90s when Michigan/Nebraska were not playing each other in bows as the #1/#2 teams. Or basically the FSU/UF/Arizona State issue in 95 (ASU and FSU were undefeated at the time both lost to one loss teams). Then you had the BCS 2004 issue with an unbeaten Auburn missing out vs an unbeaten USC and Oklahoma. Not to mention the LSU/Bama rematch that I think soured some folks. Basically you had the best records not playing or an unbeaten team left out.

No matter how many teams you expand the playoffs to you'll always have the media whining about whichever team was left out. Its best to ignore them and leave it at 4. Since the expansion there's not been a single year that anyone thought the #5 team had realistic claim to be the best team in the country, so why are we talking about expansion?

This is going to happen because of the money. ESPN or Fox will bid for it. The P5 conferences need money if for no other reason than the red ink caused by Covid. CFP may give ESPN preferential negotiation if they are willing to reopen the contract before it expires. If that doesn’t happen Fox will go after it for the next contract and CFP mgmt wants a bidding war. Right now they have to figure out the the expansion plan that brings the biggest tv contract. Expansion is going to happen, so you may as well forget about all the reasons it should stay at 4 teams. All that is moot.

Bowl game devaluation since CFB started is...

Apr 28, 2021, 1:14 PM

Why they want to expand to 16 teams. Since the number of bowls got up to 41-42 and teams with losing records made bowls, the prestige of making it to a Bowl was diminished. Then add in many players with potential draft options not playing in bowls, they became less competitive games with little prestige outside the New Yr 6. The easiest way to generate bowl interest and to keep highlight players engaged is to increase the playoffs to as many teams as possible.

What this accomplishes is devaluation of the CFB, but increases revenue potential for NCAA and big Bowls.

The NCAA should have never allowed 40+ bowls. I think they should remove Conference ties to bowls and maybe have two groups of playoffs. Top 8 teams are CFB for National championship then teams 9-16 have their own playoffs for final yr standings. This creates value in playing but doesn't overkill the top team playoffs. Creates intrigue but keeps likely blowouts from 1 playing 16 or 2 playing 15 as these would most likely have little viewer value.

That's my .02. I really prefer 4 team playoff but it is going to change unfortunately.

I'm fine with 4 teams but...

Apr 28, 2021, 2:01 PM

An expansion to 6 or 8 would also work.

To those who say "the media" or fanbases will always complain no matter how many teams, you are (1) stating the obvious which is a waste of time and (2) completely missing what this is all about.

The idea is to increase revenue [you can stop reading right here] and improve satisfaction by making two more fanbases happier. This isn't about creating the perfect system, which is impossible. Remember the saying about not allowing perfection to be the enemy of improvement.

One other consideration is the Group of 5 may eventually file a lawsuit if they continue to be excluded. Not saying they have a legit point but having 8 teams would allow the NCAA to guarantee them one spot and avoid the courts.

Change is definitely coming, but I never thought it would happen prior to 2025. If they have a consensus to do it sooner, fine with me. Non-CFP bowls aren't worth a bucket of warm spit so creating 2-4 more games that figure in the playoff actually excites me (a little).
