Clemson Spring Game

Apr 9, 2022, 9:34 PM

Has an upcoming season ever really been determined by the outcome of the Spring Game? One has to take this game with a grain of salt, given that both teams were evenly divided, the defense knows the offense after going up against it all the time, there are no sacks or QB breakaway runs allowed, and the play calling was very vanilla.

Here’s what I observed:

1. The defense is going to be solid if it can stay healthy all year long.
2. A lot of key players did not play today.
3. Growth and depth is still needed on the OL.

I saw the same game everyone else did today and while Cade did look good, I’m not ready to throw DJ out with the bath water yet. He was limited in what he could do with the play calling today but his ability to scan the field was much improved. He laid several passes in the hands of the receivers, but they flat dropped the ball. He looks slimmed down and more mobile.

All that said, did I mention that the defense is going to be lights out this year? This year’s Tiger defense is going to make a lot of QBs look bad this season.

I believe the competition at QB is only going to make the offense better this this year. However, the OL is going to be the key ingredient in determining how well the offense can be this year, regardless of the QB.

Go Tigers!

Well last years spring game offense pretty much looked like every regular season games offense….so I’d say yes

year’s Spring Game, that Clemson would be down 22 scholarship players all season long, would struggle on offense, and still finish 10-3.

I certainly can not argue with anything you have posted. It is extremely difficult,as a fan, to question some of the things you see because you have no way of knowing what the coaches are trying to accomplish. I’m sure that they now have some good film to study and will be able to improve the individual players in the offseason.

I purposely looked closely today at several things I was concerned about,as a fan, coming into the game. One was the play of the centers. I saw nothing that concerned me. The really good Clemson teams of the past have had receivers that made incredibly difficult receptions. I’m not convinced that we have that kind of talent on this team.... and it shows. I saw a lot of drops today that were not the QBs fault. Hopkins and Renfro and Ross and Leggett and a few others haven’t returned to the Tiger lineup! The running game today was almost non existent. I’m wondering if it would have been better with Shipley in the lineup! Work to do in the off season, I think.

With the protective rules in place for this game it made it difficult to assess the play of the quarterbacks. Both threw the ball well. K2 has a great release and appears to throw a catchable ball. The off season is going to be fun for these two AND the catchers. The Tigers are in great shape at the most important position.

I posted earlier today that the new number Zero is a very, very impressive kid. He will be hard to keep off the field.

I’m now wondering if we will miss the new Virginia coach more than we will the new Oklahoma coach!!!..

.

Every time I return to campus I am amazed at what my alma mater has become. I feel sure I would not survive the “Different” university that now exists on Lake Hartwell. What a life these kids have before them. GO COEDS,

Support this college every way that you can.

I'm glad someone else agrees with me about our WRs

I mean, it's a decent group but no real star power like we are used to seeing in this group. Heck, even our best WR, Ngata, dropped a first down (possibly more) pass.

But our defense, wow. I know that our DL was going against a thin, inexperienced OL, but our LBs and secondary played extremely well too.

Barrett is the obvious up-and-coming star with the LB crew, but Bentley looked great as well. But our defense is simply loaded with star power up and down the roster. I am super interested to see what our DC does with them.

I think we can win with either DJ or Cade simply because I don't think we will need to score 30 points a game to win. The times we will need to, however, we will probably lose and not because we lost Tony.

Didn’t get to see enough to really tell but there was one catch and run that looked eerily like Renfrow.

I think you see the team rely on the defense early in the season while the offense finds itself. You have an eager offensive staff, many of which recently got promotions...ready to try some new things and prove themselves. You have an embattled QB with a young gun nipping at his heels... he is eager to get the taste of 2021 out of his mouth and show us what we saw in his two 2020 games again.
The offense isnt going to come out scoring 40 ppg out of the gate but I think we see a determined group steadily improve throughout the season.
If the defense can stay healthy early on, we should be in good shape to make a run.

Not to mention we have 3 monsters at running back to rely on. With our defense we may be able to score enough points that we can win without a very effective passing game.
