85 scholarship distribution.

I know every coach has their formula. I know it depends on what type of offense and defense they run. But, just curious, what do y'all think the numbers for Clemson should be?
I'll just make a wild guess off the top of my head. I'm sure y'all can do better.
Offense 42
QB - 2 RB - 4 TE - 3 WR - 8 OL - 10 That's 27 that should be in the rotation for playing every week. Which leaves 15 for guys who will be redshirted or will be young guys still developing but only play in emergencies or blowouts. QB - 2 RB - 4 TE - 3 WR - 2 OL - 5
Defense 43
I won't even try to delineate them. I think you need a bunch of hybrid players. Guys who can play 2 positions. S/OLB, OLB/DE, DE/DT. And, if you can get an Isaiah Simmons that helps a whole lot. (A guy who can play virtually any position but DT.) Unfortunately they come around about once every 30 years or less.

I know this is not the 1980's, nor is this Nebraska. No way we could afford to use 20 scholarships on the Oline without jeopardizing depth at 2/3 more positions and we already do "preferred walk-ons/grey shirts", which should strengthen that 15, if guys are identified and coached up.

How about 18? You don’t need 8 rb’s and 6 te’s

That number makes sense. Or maybe 17. Need 5 QBs since it’s almost a given at least one is going to take his ball and go home via the portal.

Yep, that could work.
But, remember I have only 3 TE who are ready to play. Maybe cut it to 2 who are being groomed but not expected to play.
As for WRs I'm thinking that is the position where a true frosh could be ready to play. Clemson sometimes runs a 4 WR set. Maybe 7 ready to play and 2 being groomed.
That would put the OL up to 17.
I'm not sure you could have 10, or maybe 11, OL who are in the rotation and keep 6, or 7, guys happy knowing it will be 3 years (redshirt sophomore year) before they see significant playing time.

I think 42 is high for the offensive side of the ball.
Currently Clemson, at minimum, gives a scholarship to the starting punter, kicker and long snapper.
Now you are at 82.
For several reasons I think defense needs more scholarships than offense.
Outside of OL, almost every position on defense requires more developmental time than its offensive counterpart.
There also isn't a position on defense that only has 1 guy on the field at a time the way most teams do with QB, RB and even TE to an extent.
That means defense needs more depth.
Obviously with the absurd number of offensive injuries this season at Clemson, it doesn't seem that way but over the course of time it should be true.
We all saw what Clemson's defense looked like in the years pre-Venables and in Venables first few years when he could only trust the starters and didn't have depth.
Even with healthy starters, you need to play more guys on defense over the course of a season to keep their legs fresh.
In the end I would most likely allot between 37-39 on offense and try to have 43-45 on defense with the 3 special teams scholarships mentioned above.
Using your numbers, I would likely take a scholarship from QB, 1-2 from RB and 1-2 from TE to get to the 37-39.

Thank you, I forgot about the 3 special teams guys. That would make it harder to get to more than 15 OL, unless you took the three from the defensive side of the ball.

I would drop 2 of the RB’s (6 is enough), and 1 of the TE’s. Use 2 of those to bump the OLine to 17, keep the other s holly for a random superstar, preferred walk on, portal player, etc.

Oops. We need 3 or so for special teams.
I think the NCAA needs to increase the scholarship allotment to about 91-92. Teams should be able to recruit for each position each year (22x4 years=88. Then throw in 3 or 4 for special teams).
