75+- yrs ago 4 ACC BasketBall schools had a tournament called The Dixie Classic

and it pitted the 4 Tobacco Teams of UNC, Duke, WF & NcST against 4 different national invitees each year in Raleigh NC (believe it or not at NCst’s modern arena built for Everett Casey their great BB HC)..all of who were usually highly ranked so to match up with the NC schools who usually were in Top 10.
In all it’s years NOT One invited outside team EVER won the Dixie Classic Tournament which included teams like: KY, Indiana, Louisville, Cinncy, Bradley, UCLA, etc.
Tickets were as hard to come by and as expensive as a ticket to Churchill Downs or the Indy 500 would have been.
At maybe age 12 (1953?) I was allowed to go with my Dad & his two brothers and my ticket cost about $75 back then and was purchased outside the arena. I remember little now except the crowds were loud & electric, the athletes were world class, the arena was smoke-filled and the fans were as rabid as Europe’s best soccer fans.
The Kentucky Wildcats with Adolph Rupp came to Raleigh ranked #1 couple of times and both times went down..which made him make an angry decision to never come again..probably b/c of those good ole ACC refs & some home-cooking.
As you may know the Dixie Classic sadly succumbed to a cheating scandal involving two of the N.C. Tobacco Team’s players (maybe not all 5 starters) throwing the game or shaving points so to beat the bettors, or help them..thus earning money.
The teams involved in the cheating were none other than the Wolfpack & the Heels!
PS: Know that back then that NCst & WF were big boys as was UNC with Duke not on the level as they’ve been last umpteen yrs with Coach K.
And the history of Frank McQuire is being made in this era and later he came to USC in protest to some issues with the ACC..I think about higher academics.

Reynolds Coliseum ... built but NC State for Everett Case
Feb 9, 2022, 8:21 PM
|
|
... the huge (at the time) venue on the NCState campus hosted the Dixie Classic while the other schools still played in relative “Cracker boxes” ...
It was latter expanded to host the fledgling ACC Tournament.

For years, the ACC Tournament was also played there.

When it was originally completed, it seated in excess of 14,000. It was subsequently renovated (a few times actually) and now only seats about 5,000.

True on ACC tourney, but you have the renovation backward

The original Reynolds Coliseum was expanded to its present approximately 12k capacity in order to house the first ACC tourney. It was a clumsy expansion that merely blew out the sides and added seats making the final configuration a pretty weird long rectangle. If you were seated in the newer sections, you had to sit sideways in your seat to face the court! The place is now home to NCSU Women’s Hoops, but seating capacity hasn’t been reduced.

and it looked much smaller. Maybe that was just my imagination.
Those old arenas like Reynolds, Carmichael, Cameron, University Hall at UVa and Cole Fieldhouse are all actually pretty cool

I live in Raleigh and go there frequently.

It’s extremely antiquated with virtually no concourse area outside the seating section so it’s dwarfed by places like Dean Dome and RBC Center. It’s what Cameron Indoor would look like if the just blew out the ends and added 3,000 seats. It’s long and narrow and the “end zone” seats are dark almost lost to view, especially on TV. But it still really does seat 12k for hoops.

I saw a story on the news last night that said...

gas prices in the US were at an 8-year high with the average price for a gallon of gas being $3.47 which was an increase of eight cents compared to this time last week, and it is expected to get worse.
Of course, the Whitehouse blames the increase on Russia and while there is some truth to that, it is largely Biden's decision to block construction of the oil pipeline from Canada that would lessen the need for foreign imports and enable the US to produce more here at home to lower energy costs.
Go Brandon indeed !!!!

add in Swofford, biased officiating, and the football probation issue...that is why we don't run around chanting "ACC! ACC! ACC!".

North-South Doubleheader in the 60s
Feb 9, 2022, 9:43 PM
|

I never attended, but I remember the North-South Doubleheader with Clemson, South Carolina, UNC and NSCU where the SC teams would play the NC teams on consecutive nights in Charlotte.
I have no idea when it started or ended. All on radio for me in the mid 60s.
I am sure someone on here knows more.

Both Dixie and North-South

Some rudimentary web searching led me to an NCSU schedule where both were in the same season.

I worked some mid 70's North Souths as a photog when Furman was going and Clemson had stopped. I believe GT filled in. Saw some great NC and NC ST team games.

I think it was '68 - Randy Mahaffey scored over 30 against the Heels and we barely won. One of the greatest games I ever saw - we sat in chairs on the floor behind one basket. I think the score was like 92-88. We also beat State the other night too.

but Everett Casey was a visionary.
Frank McGuire was largely responsible for uof7c leaving the ACC primarily because he disliked the leagues more stringent academic requirements that effectively prevented Frank from recruiting a bunch of functionally illiterate players.
