Darlington raceway open to public today to drive on

It’s open today to drive your personal car. Max speed 70 mph. It’s a great opportunity for anyone wanting to drive on a race track.

Amazing. They must have an excellent lawyer on retainer. I grew up nearby and remember as a teenager, probably close to 50 years ago, being with my dad as he got the old Ford Station wagon pegged out at Darlington. Believe me we were far in excess of 70 mph. At the time, I thought that was so cool. Now I think about how potentially liable Darlington Raceway was. It's a great memory! It's certainly a different time. I bet you have to fill out reams of forms now to absolve Darlington Raceway if you were to get injured or killed. Do it if you're close by!!

I remember we were coming back from the beach when I was a kid and they were having open house at the track. My dad removed the camper from our truck and we got in line to drive around the track when there was a wreck and they decided to cancel it for the day. I was so upset that a guy driving a pace car came up and asked us if we wanted to ride around the track in the pace car of course we said yes. The pace car driver was Buddy Baker and we had a blast.

70 mph ain't hardly even fast enough to keep from falling

off the bottom of the track with those high banks. It's like going to a Cat House and only getting a Lap Dance. :(

I grew up in Darlington and cruising town was big then. I had a 72 Trans Am and late one night I was riding out behind the track and someone left an access gate to the track open. Well, being the enterprising young man I was I eased in and through the tunnel. A quick trip through the garage area and I was on my way. Long story short, I went fast. 70 is nothing with the banking. After just two laps, (un)common sense kicked in and I headed out as the sheriff’s dept is literally a mile away and HP a few miles more. I’ve gone around in other ways since but nothing beat that adrenaline rush.
