I remember back in the early 1990s when South Carolina was invited to join the SEC all of the pundits predicting that the SEC membership would finally turn things around for South Carolina's football program and would level the playing field (or even tilt it) against their in-state rival Clemson. I have to admit that I was a little concerned about what the future held especially since 1992 was a really bad season of football for the Tigers!

Twenty-six years later and following our second straight year of dominating the Yard Birds, I thought I'd take the time to see what pick-up (gains) they had achieved against Clemson in the series since joining the best football conference in America, and this is what I found:

* First 85 games (1896 - 1991):

CU 53 wins
SC 32 wins
4 ties
CU had a 62.35% winning percentage (not counting the four ties either way) in the pre-SEC days

* Last 26 games (1992 - 2017):

CU 16 wins
SC 10 wins
0 ties
CU had a 61.5% winning percentage since Carolina joined the SEC

So, with all of the SEC money and prestige (It Just Means More...), they have picked up less than a 1% improvement in the winning percentage against Clemson. And imagine what that would have looked like without Spurrier's unprecedented (for them) 5 - 0 run factored into the numbers.

Clemson's overall winning percentage, from 1896 - 2017, is 62.2%.

The numbers don't lie.
