60 Minutes Segment on Greenville

Jan 10, 2022, 7:32 PM

Did anyone see this last night? Most of the segment was interviews with Greenville business people. Bill Whitaker was on location in Greenville. A LinkedIn employee was a big part of the segment talking about how different the job market is now compared to before the pandemic. On LinkedIn 1 in 7 job postings are remote work. Before the pandemic it was 1 in 67.

Carl Sobocinski who owns Sobys and several other restaurants here in Greenville was interviewed. He he had some interesting comments. The other three Greenville business people interviewed were all African-Americans. They were all impressive and did a great job. However, it was disappointing that the interview did not more closely resemble the actual population in Greenville. I know I’m not being politically correct even verbalizing that thought. But if you knew nothing about Greenville and saw that segment, it would mislead you.

The biggest take away is it’s amazing that Greenville South Carolina had its own segment on 60 minutes. It was mentioned that many people are moving to Greenville from other parts of the country. So the exposure was way more good than bad. It’s just unsettling to me that the over the top efforts to include African-Americans on network TV is not representative of reality.

Maybe they'll bring in a big physics thinktank firm

who will build a time machine and convert it to 1980's Greenville.

I'll gladly go to Freedom Weekend Aloft and then cap it off with drinks at Henny's Underground.

Yeah I know Carl. He has done a lot for Greenville. But still felt like the story would confuse someone that had never heard of Greenville watching that segment. I’ve lived here for 26 years. 95% plus of the profitable businesses in Greenville are not owned by African-Americans. Not saying that’s a good thing at all, but it is what it is. It would’ve been disappointing if there was no African-American representation in the segment, but the way it came across just gave you a false sense of what Greenville is.

I’ve watched 60 minutes all my life and enjoy the show. And I felt like the story was well done outside of the fact that there seem to be an agenda to over represent the community with African-Americans. Just saying.

Same with practically every commercial anymore, especially in sporting events. If you were just dropped into this country from outer space and had nothing but commercials to go by, you'd figure the US was about 30% white, 40% percent black, 30% Hispanic and 15% Asian. I mentioned this to relative by marriage who has family in Germany. He says commercials there are same there, where whites make up about 95% of the population.

Best I can figure, it's one of two things, in order of likelihood:

A) Pandering to keep the woke crowd at bay

Z) White guilt sells

If you lived up here as long as I have, your perspective of that segment would be different. It doesn’t really bother me. It’s not that big of a deal. But many of us here in Greenville had the same impression as me after watching it. It’s just interesting how networks must think politically correct drives ratings.

I haven’t seen a commercial with a white married couple (of opposite sexes) in about 3 years, lol.

Keowee , my wife and I talk about that all the time. What the heck is it? Companies just terrified of being labeled racist? It’s gotten to the point of being a joke.

since I got a DVR. No matter how much I want to watch something, including Clemson football games, I am patient enough to record them. If the game is going to predictably be a good one I might watch the first half then watch something else on recording until the second half has progressed enough to FF through commercials.

Time becomes more valuable as one ages the the tolerance for tomfoolery diminishes proportionally. Now get off my lawn, whippersnapper!

100% true. Was in Old Navy and all the large posters with people on them had zero white people. They are just trying to be politically correct.

If it were reversed, however, there would be lawsuits.
