50 Years ago I arose from the bed on Easter Sunday

Apr 4, 2021, 11:43 AM

after being off my feet since Sept. 28. I have posted this before about joking with my Jewish doctor that I wanted to wait until that day to put weight on my leg. He had tried to get me to do so a few days earlier but I didn't trust the regeneration of several inches of shattered femur bone and wanted to wait. What I add today that I have not posted is the fact that the student nurse who was just months from graduation was by my side for the occasion. She had awakened me at the beginning of her 1st shift on my ward a few weeks earlier to announce that she had reached the final clinical assignment of her training and that I had been given to her as her "special" patient. Still grumpy from having my sleep disturbed, I mumbled, "That breaks my heart" and rolled over. Great first impression to give the one who would return at nights to talk with me and who wanted to stand by my side on her day off when I stood on my feet for the first time in ages. It hurt to put weight on even my good foot after so long, but to have her arms reach around me in physical and emotional support made it barely noticeable. She was there for another three months until graduating and being commissioned as a first lieutenant and we visited many places in the DC area together. It did break my heart when she was re-assigned to her next duty on the West Coast.

I was expecting you to say something about an anniversary celebration. Big let down.

How did you shatter your femur?

I’ve read a lot of your posts, but don’t remember seeing how you were actually injured. Wasn’t sure if it was enemy fire or a land mine or grenade.

While trying to get to sleep on a mountainside- bullet entered back of leg just above knee & exited front just below hip joint. Only part not damaged was the femoral artery in which case I would have bled out
