I saw some requests for pictures from Nam - these are not mine but were taken by a guy who was in my platoon until he was injured in May 1970. Go to hill4-11.org and click on "Photos" and then on Charlie Mankins pictures - there are a couple of hundred pictures listed by topics such as "Choppers" , People" and a couple other titles under his name. Good pictures of the terrain, firebase we worked from and even us on a river bed digging up a ton of rice from Louisiana that had been given to "friendly" villagers who then sold it to the VC. Had grenades under the 2 100 pound sacks at the ends of the trench where they had it hidden in the sand (pins pulled of course to give us a little surprise). I am in that picture. I like the pictures taken from the choppers we were riding in. If you look at Charlie's pictures, let me know what you think. Lots of other pictures posted on that website from the area we were in, but his are the ones of my platoon.

Too many in this country don't have an understanding or appreciation for the sacrifices our servicemen AND THEIR FAMILIES have made.
Vietnam War was gut wrenching but if there had been no resistance, there would have been much more communist expansion by force.
I was in high school during the Vietnam War. I remember wearing POW bracelets. If it had continued a couple more years, I likely would have been drafted.

as well and even wrote a term paper on it in 11th grade. Five years later I am living what I had researched. Who Knew?

Hung out the side spraying bullets everywhere during troop drop off, pickup, rescue or recovery. Also described his role as target practice for enemy troops on the ground (especially night flights).
He showed us pictures when we were kids. Had some great pics of his pals and equipment. Unfortunately also had enough pictures of bodies alive and dead missing all sorts of body parts.
Crazy stories he’d share. Unfortunately gave him crazy nightmares for years.
Pop actually volunteered for Vietnam instead of the draft. That way he had more control over his assignment and kept him off ground patrol. Hated the heat doing basic training at Fort Jackson in Cootlumbia. Probably helped when heading to. Vietnam. Swore he’d never live there.

yeah.ft. jackson was a hardship tour.living amongst the dirtpeckers was worse than anything the army could throw at you.

My uncle served in Vietnam. He died in his early 50's from an Agent Orange related illness.
