440 yards surrendered to Tech ... what does it mean? Nada.

Nov 15, 2013, 11:10 AM

If, on Thursday afternoon your crystal ball showed you that Clemson would give up 440 total yards on offense to Ga Tech, you probably assume that at least 400 of those yards were on the ground in long, sustained, clock-eating drives, and that we were soundly defeated by the Jackets.

On the other hand, if your crystal ball then showed you that almost half of Ga Tech's total yards would come through the air, and a large chunk of the rest of the yardage would be during mop-up time, what would you have assumed??

You'd assume a big Clemson win ... because:

A team that plays Ga Tech, gives up lots of yards. It's a foregone conclusion.

A team that forces Ga Tech to pass for 200 yards is going to win almost every time.

Agree

Also think that the majority came after the game was well in hand. Defense got looser and took more chances instead of the assigned football they played early.

good point..

Nov 15, 2013, 11:14 AM

stats don't always tell the story... I'm not sure I've ever seen GT (in the option) dominated like they were in the first quarter.

If GT is throwing for 200+, they are in trouble

Good point on shutting down the option. Dl did a great job

Lesson for me: pound for pound, inch for inch, Godhigh is

Nov 15, 2013, 11:21 AM

the most productive offensive player I've seen in a while. He reminded my of a smaller Spiller. And after a while I thought our D backfield was playing more to not get hurt than to keep stats low. We played our usual (sadly) 'comfort margin' defense. Not to say we played bad. Just not as tight on Godhigh and others as we could have or should have. "Avoid the big play" kind of strategy. Godhigh slips through every now and then , though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed: Glad we're finished with him...

Nov 15, 2013, 11:49 AM

..I have no problem acknowledging a young with such a blend of ability and desire. Kids like him and Campanero at Wake make watching the game a joy.

Except when they're playing us, of course ... then they're a pain in the rear.

And my understanding is that we was a walk-on. Have to

love those star rankings!

Godhigh is the next Gio Bernard

Nov 15, 2013, 12:52 PM [ in reply to Lesson for me: pound for pound, inch for inch, Godhigh is ]

Both little guys that are dangerous, and both come/came from underperforming ACC schools where they were primarily the only weapon. My first instinct says that he's too small for the NFL, but with Gio and Ray Rice and a few other little guys making it work, he keeps it up and he just might make it.

You probably didn't see a lot of him because it was Martavis and Mike's coming out party yesterday.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Chad Kelly threw one pass to Hopper, that was in the dirt.

That was the only time I noticed Hopper in the game.

Most of their yards came against 2nd and 3rd team.***

GO TIGERS!!

What impressed me was how we handled their unique attack.

Nov 15, 2013, 11:57 AM

I'm not worried about the passing yards. What's been so frustrating in the past was when GT would come into town and bring their option offense and we'd be completely confused. Last night was the exact opposite. I believe this wasn't a fluke. We have worked out the kinks. I believe that as long as PJ is there, we'll know how to manage his offense. Doesn't mean we'll always win, but I believe he'll have to beat us with something other than his option.

Re: What impressed me was how we handled their unique attack.

Nov 15, 2013, 12:00 PM

The real sign for me was when they punted , in the past they would run on 4 th and 2 , and we couldn't get them off the field .

When our offence scored quickly it broke their will .

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not concerned about the total yardage surrendered but

Nov 15, 2013, 12:24 PM

Still concerned about the big plays given up.

33 Yard TD run and a 55 yard TD run.

We have given up a 50+ yard TD in every game except for UVa and NCSU (and NCSU was a fortunate call from having one)

If we could cut down on these plays this could be a very good defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The big difference is that we are disruptive this year and

Nov 15, 2013, 12:25 PM

can force negative plays and 3-and-outs. Some of the GT games in recent years were like dying from a thousand cuts. Seemingly every running play went for 3-4+ yards, GT was in short yardage on every 3rd down, and we could hardly even force them to punt. They just controlled the clock and didn't give our offense many opportunities.

GT had the ball for 39 minutes against us in 2011 and over 37 minutes in the 2009 ACCG. They punted 3 times in 2011 and NONE in that 2009 game.

They punted 6 times last night with the majority of them early in the game while we were building a huge lead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, big leads are opportunities for young players to get...

Nov 15, 2013, 12:43 PM

...some playing time, and I agree that the numbers you mentioned are meaningless, really. Game experience is a good thing for players who don't get many reps. Getting a big lead on GT forced them out of their usual clock-eating running game strategy.

Our first team defense played well, last night, overall. BV is bringing these guys along nicely, I'd say.

The big test for them awaits in Columbia on Nov. 30th.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly I was impressed with your rush defense

Nov 15, 2013, 1:04 PM

It furthers my belief that we won't beat you by pounding Mike Davis. We will have to throw the ball well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We seemed to be able to handle the fullback with our tackles

Nov 15, 2013, 1:13 PM

which allowed us to cover the wide stuff. Great night for assignment defense and getting off of blocks.
