I believe the talks were in Fall of 1991 for entry in the 1992 season. Officially no invitations were issued to Clemson or Florida State, although everyone knows that is who the SEC wanted. In the SEC office it is called talks right up to when you join. We tell you we will accept your application and you send your application. We claim we did not solicit you that you asked to come. We accept you and there is no basis for a tortuous interference lawsuit.

That said we wanted both Clemson and Florida State for 1992. For whatever reason at Clemson you fell through. At F.S.U. Bowden didn't want the more competitive S.E.C. to mess up his title dreams. We picked up the Gamecocks and Hogs and the rest is history.
