Alleged Howard’s Rock vandal faces up to 20 years in jail

Jun 3, 2015, 11:34 AM

Posted by Kevin McGuire on June 3, 2015, 10:04 AM EDT

The iconic Howard’s Rock at Clemson was vandalized two years ago. Now the man charged with the crime against one of college football’s more unique marks is heading to court.

Micah Rogers of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina will have his day in court on July 20, according to his attorney. Rogers was charged with grand larceny and malicious injury to property of more than $10,000. If found guilty of vandalizing Howard’s Rock, Rogers faces up to 20 years in jail.

In June 2013 Clemson confirmed Howard’s Rock, name din honor of College Football Hall of Famer Frank Howard, had been vandalized earlier in the month. The university announced a small part of the rock was broken off its pedestal. Rogers was arrested later in the month on a pair of misdemeanor charges at the time. The charges were later upgraded after the estimated damage to the rock was valued at over $10,000. Surveillance cameras allegedly caught Rogers in the act and a witness identified him.

Police later arrested the father of Micah, Michael Rogers, and 17-year old Alden James Gainey for their alleged connection to the vandalism. Each was charged with felony counts of conspiracy and obstructing justice

I hope he gets something in jail, but 20 yrs is excessive

Jun 3, 2015, 12:47 PM [ in reply to I hope he sees jail time ]

he should get 30 days, servable on the weekends (if he has a job), and 500-1000 hours of community service picking up trash on campus.

a weekly kick in the nuts from a Clemson fan for two years.

isn't there a law on the books that covers crossing a state

Jun 3, 2015, 12:05 PM

line to commit a felony??

Seriously, whille the young man probably qualifies for the "first offender" program, I hope its possible to levy a stiff fine and some substantial, WORTHWHILE community service

assuming it's a first offense...

I think 6 months to a year is appropriate. It's property damage(albeit or a highly symbolic nature) but it's not like he molested a kid.

that would be a shame to lock him up for 20 years, he will probably plead down to probabtion and community service.

Whatever happened to the guy who tried to break into case this past year?***

I'm sorry guys but that was a dare type prank gone wrong.

There's no way the kid foresaw the depth of pain a grief he caused us. The solicitor should offer him 1 year suspended if he returns that priceless chunk of rock and makes a public apology to all The Clemson Family. No lawyer talk but a heartfelt 'I'm sorry folks.'

If he sticks to his lie and drives the grief deeper and makes our irreplaceable property a sorrow filled memory he should do 20 in non violent confinement with probation dependent upon the return of the rock and the apology. The little chit would give it up then.

If it's a jury trial he might get the max but I think the judge will intervene if it's within his authority to do so.
