26 years ago, 1996: Bill Clinton wins re-election as

President of the United States, defeating former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole—the Republican nominee—and Ross Perot, the Reform Party nominee. Remember Ross Perot talking about "that giant sucking sound" as jobs flee the US following enaction of NAFTA? Rupert Murdoch entered the 24-hour news business, as he launched the Fox News channel. MSNBC was launched, and MSN Hotmail came online for the first time. The Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, is finally arrested.
A Bomb explosion in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park kills one, injures more than 100, casting a pall over the Olympic Games. TWA Flight 800 explodes moments after taking off from John F. Kennedy International Airport, killing all 230 people aboard. In yet another plane crash, ValuJet Flight 592 plunges into the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 people aboard.
In college football, the ACC Champions for 1996 were yet again the 8-0-0, 11-1-0, 3rd ranked Seminoles of Florida State. Though they were undefeated in the regular season, they were 52-20 losers to Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The only other ranked team in the ACC was the 10th ranked, 6-2-0, 10-2-0 Tar Heel squad of North Carolina. They were 35-31 losers to Texas in the Sun Bowl.
National Champions in both polls were the 12-1 SEC Champion Florida Gators of Coach Steve Spurrier. Florida State had actually handed the Gators their only regular season loss, 24-21 in their rivalry game in Tallahassee. But, Florida more than got their revenge with the 52-20 mauling of FSU in the Sugar Bowl to take the Natty. Florida Coach Steve Spurrier never wasted any chance to run up a score, especially if the opponent was Florida State. And he still had a bitter taste in his mouth from being trampled underfoot himself, 62-24 by Nebraska in last year's Fiesta Bowl. So, he didn't spare any horses this time around.
1996 was one of the few times that we opened the season with an ACC rival, and it was a road game, to boot. North Carolina hosted the Tigers, and they totally overwhelmed us, to the tune of 45-0. Next was a more traditional opener, at home, but now Game 2, as the Tigers defeated Furman in the Valley, but only by a score of 19-3. Following a bye week, we went on the road at Missouri, for a 7 pm night game, and got out-Tigered by two touchdowns, 38-24. Seven games in a row against ACC foes would follow this game.
We first took down Wake Forest at home, 21-10, but showed how wide the gap had gotten between FSU and the rest of us the next week, losing at Doak Campbell 34-3. Low scoring offense was again the order of the day at Duke, but the Tigers took a 13-6 decision. Back home in Death Valley for a 3:30 ABC featured game against No. 22 Georgia Tech, we pulled out a 28-24 victory. Another 3:30 game at home against Maryland netted a 35-3 win. We next got back to our historically winning ways against No. 15 Virginia on the road, taking a 24-16 win. A nooner in the Valley against NC State proved to be most pleasurable, 40-17.
Those wins jumped us back into the rankings at No. 22, just in time for the South Carolina Dirt Peckers to come to Tigertown. The Capons had a good running back named Duce Staley, who had been out for a month with a bad ankle. But, he sucked it up and returned for this game. Clemson would just as soon he had rested this week, too, as the Duce was loose just enough for the Capons to be out front by a score of 34-31, late in the game.
We got the ball back with just over a minute to go, and QB Nealon Greene furiously drove the Tigers all the way down to inside the South Carolina 20. But, the "easy" 32 yard field goal that would have sent the game to overtime was hooked wide left, allowing the Coots to escape the Valley with a win. I remember feeling totally cheated as a fan, thinking that a hard fought, high scoring game like this SHOULD have been decided in overtime. Clemson now leads the series 55-35-4.
Our 7-4 record got us a Peach Bowl invite against No. 17 LSU, but once again, the wrong Tigers prevailed in a totally defensive struggle, as LSU came away with a hard fought 10-7 win. All 1996 results below.
At North Carolina L 0–45 Furman W 19–3 At Missouri L 24–38 Wake Forest W 21–10 At No. 2 Florida State L 3–34 At Duke W 13–6 No. 22 Georgia Tech W 28–25 Maryland W 35–3 At No. 15 Virginia W 24–16 NC State W 40–17 South Carolina No. 22 L 31–34 (Clemson leads series 55-35-4.)
December 28 Clemson vs. No. 17 LSU Peach Bowl L 7–10

officially, but several games had been decided by overtime before then, including Furman and Appalachian State in 1991.
