247 back pedaling on Golson

May 8, 2015, 7:16 AM

We checked with more sources for the latest on quarterback Everett Golson and came away with the following:
The South Carolina staff is in the process of determining whether Golson will be eligible to transfer to an SEC school. One non-Gamecock source said two other SEC schools do not believe he would be eligible based on how their compliance interprets the SEC bylaw 14.1.15.1, part d, which covers the conference’s rules for a graduate student exception: He may receive financial aid, practice and compete so long as “the student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution.”
Since this scenario is unprecedented it is hard to know for sure whether the fact that Golson “served his time” and worked his way back into good academic standing at Notre Dame would work in his favor if an SEC school filed a waiver with the league office on his behalf.
A source on the Myrtle Beach end of things said as of last week Golson had Florida State number one on his list followed by South Carolina. Josh Newberg of Noles247 reported on Thursday that the Seminoles staff has decided against taking a quarterback transfer. Georgia is also of interest to Golson and a source on that end of things said the Bulldogs would likely take him based on what he had been told.
Obviously the first step for South Carolina and Georgia, or any SEC school for that matter, is to determine with certainty that Golson can transfer to an SEC institution and be eligible. Once that happens they can move on to any potential visit(s).
We will keep you posted as we hear more.

Do you think he can be successful in Steve spurrier's system because Golson is kind of like a little better Connor Shaw and Steve Spurrier does a good job with qbs no matter how little natural talent they have? I think UGA would be his best fit because they already have some receivers and an established running game.

Not really, IMHO. Golson would be eligible - and would be taken - at any other school in the country that had a need at QB. Notre Dame doesn't mess around with academics; they suspended him, he got his act together, he graduated. That SEC rule was designed to stop known felons from transferring in; Slive got tired, apparently, of chick-punching guys who been arraigned but neither acquitted nor convicted transferring in and then committing a Repeat Offense before they even had to change the batteries on their LoJack.

Personally I think the SEC would, in Golson's case, be insane not to issue a waiver for him. The guy isn't a felon or a problem child...he's a guy who got into academic trouble at Notre Dame, a place where a lot of athletes get into academic trouble because the Irish are actually serious about putting the "student" part back in "student-athlete". They don't care who you are. Even if you're a QB who happened to have just played for a national title. (Like the Irish or hate them, they mean it...as four football players who got suspended all last year for allegedly cheating on tests discovered.)

Golson is a talented QB trying to find a new start so he can make the NFL. Personally I think his biggest problem is that he really didn't progress at Notre Dame like he was expected to - some of his turnovers this past year were incomprehensible and had to have left Bryan Kelly wondering if Golson could go through a progression at all - but I also don't think the guy is a problem child who's going to embarass the conference. I do think if he and Spurrier could work together (an open question, that) that he'd be a very good fit for South Carolina and could re-energize a season that looks .500 at best right now.

What's the problem? He needs a home. USC needs a QB. It's the SEC's decision on whether or not taking Golson helps them or hurts them.

We may grump because we want South Carolina to fail, but if the situation were reversed we'd likely be pursuing him too.

There will be plenty of great schools that start recruiting him today, that he doesn't have to have a special waiver.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good post, but read the rule again

May 8, 2015, 8:05 AM [ in reply to Re: 247 back pedaling on Golson ]

Doing a year at a Jr College gets them around the rule as it just states "previous"
school, not all schools attended.IE Chad Kelly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's so black and white. Seems ridiculous but the rule is clear***

SEC and academic requirements in the same sentence without adding oxymoron in there somewhere?

Funny thing is

May 8, 2015, 7:37 AM

If he had flunked out of ND, went to a Jr College, the SEC would welcome him. Instead he served his suspension, got back into his college and kept his grades up.The SEC never rewards you for doing things the right wat.

It would only make sense that he goes to Scar because

they dont comply with rules and he would have ZERO qb competition.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hopefully FSU or $CU does get him.....

May 8, 2015, 8:32 AM

and his propensity to turn the ball over continues.

Golson has 12 turnovers in the first five games coming into Notre Dame's game with Arizona State, and then against Arizone State, he turned it over five more times (two of which resulted in a pick six).

I can't wait to see the look on Golson's face the first time Spurrier yanks him for a turnover. This is going to be priceless. Golson will be in tears before his career ends at USUC.

He didn't cheat at ND!!

May 9, 2015, 7:02 AM

He is actually a very smart kid. Like i said in a previous post,The reason he got suspended for a year was because he was taking tests/exams for other athletes and got caught, he wasn't cheating on his own. He would of got a full ride to alot of colleges even if he didn't play football
