I think that's definitely right. The defensive line wasn't as dominant as we hoped, but they were solid as a unit. It was actually other guys stepping up who made it a good unit (KJ, Ruke, etc.) while some of our projected playmakers had a worse season. The linebackers were great. Really our weakness was corner, as we haven't had the kind of shut down corner needed to guard against elite receivers in a few years (Booth was closest, but I'd say he was more of a ball hawk than a shut down guy).

I do hope we can avoid the injury bug that's plagued us the last three years. I'm not as quick as some to say we should fire Batson as some people are. I think he's done some great things during his time at Clemson, even if we haven't developed many elite linemen. I do think elite S&C (I wouldn't call Batson elite) is the most underrated coaching position. Georgia's success is highly tied to their stealing Cochran from Alabama. The two programs have really gone different routes since then, despite Alabama still outrecruiting UGA.

A prerequisite for success at any position group is to remain healthy, no? Isn't the best ability AVAILability?

Gotta love off-season articles....

Our cbs definitely improved throughout the season but I

wouldn't say that I've got a lot of faith in leaving them on an island in man coverage very much.

That is the stat that many who wanted Wes Goodwin out after the season did not see. Up front, we limited the explosive run plays throughout the season, and our best positional group IMO were the LBs (who is the LB coach....) Our secondary were young and/or banged up, can't blame WG on that. Our offense couldn't stay on the field long enough for the defense to keep the intensity. I know we were all serenaded with the schemes and s*xy looks BV shown presnap but overall WG did good with the talent we had. Important task now is how player development progresses throughout the off-season. Grabbing 5 star players isn't the total recipe it's development (see Wade Woodaz). Dabo was right keeping Wes as DC.

This pretty much. Another thing is that a good secondary will generally boost stats for the front seven. You end up getting coverage sacks you wouldn't have otherwise gotten or short gains instead of chunk yardage. There's definitely sort of a symbiotic relationship where the two levels impact one another.

I do think the corners are in a nice spot going into the spring. The article mentioned how Wiggins and Pride got thrown into the fire, and that experience should be pretty valuable. I just think it's a solid position group and there's not really a huge drop-off in terms of talent from Jones/Wiggins/Greene to Lukus/Pride. Don't know much about Oliver but Terrell and Lewis should help with the depth as well.

Absolutely and the defense class in this cycle kept us in the top 20 recruiting. If it wasn't for the haul Wes and team brought in... we would have been down in recruiting.

Will be interested to see how the talent develops. Seems we've missed a couple cycles ago and had some character issues. Was Dabo too hard on dk? Or did uga change him? Davis, we all know what happened there. Even being granted immunity, never lived up to his recruiting ratings. Sheridan has experience but talent wise, should get passed.

2023 DL and LB starters will again be rock solid

Jan 24, 2023, 9:23 PM

Nate Wiggins is the #1 man at CB. Can Sheridan Jones go from solid to standout as a cover man and a hitter - have not seen it yet. Malcolm Greene has always impressed me as a hitter at nickel back. Hope to see more of him in 2023. If Pride or Lukus can make the jump to 1st string with Wiggins and/or Oliver or Lewis can compete for reps, the team will benefit. Look for Jones and Wiggins to start game 1. No brainer that Wesleychick stature & Defense rankings can make a jump with healthy starters and improved DB/Safety play.

We have a very good 2-deep, after that, the drop off is significant. Injuries will sink this position group, fingers crossed we escape the injury bug with our CB's.
