2017 QB

Nov 7, 2016, 12:13 AM

Tough schedule next year--- are we handing keys to highly touted Johnson kid from Indiana?

I'm thinking he's going to be our best option- does he enroll early?

I believe Cooper will win the job------looks to be silky smooth and throws a beauty of a pass.JMO

Hope you're right.

But IF Johnson wins the job, I feel confident we will have another special signal caller. I gotta think it's going to a a tall order for Johnson to win the spot.

Here is how I see it. Cooper, Bryant and Johnson will duke it out for the starting position. Bryant has been in the system longer, Cooper is an outstanding talent with a cannon on his right shoulder, and Johnson is simply a talent similar to that of Watson coming out of high school. Bryce is our next "Nick", always waiting in the wings to see what happens. Is Johnson an early enrollee? If yes, then it will be an epic battle. Bryant will know the system better than all four. Cooper is a big strong kid and can chuck it. Nice problem to have. Bryant will probably be the starter going IN to spring ball. I have no idea what is going to set these three apart.

Johnson isn't on Watson's level out of high school. Lawrence is or possibly a hair better.

Well who knows? DW4 was 4 star out of high school. Johnson is 5 star and no. 1 overall QB.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DW4 was a 4* cause of camps. Johnson's a 5* because of them

Nov 7, 2016, 8:06 AM

DW4 wasn't nearly as good in a camp setting because it doesn't showcase his best attributes (ie. pocket awareness, escapability, being calm when there's chaos around him, etc.). There should have been no question of him being a 5* just based on a real game action.

Johnson on the other hand isn't as polished in a real game setting as Watson was coming out of high school, but he's all world in shorts and a t-shirt because he's so accurate when conditions are perfect.

Don't just count out Chase Brice yet. I've had the opportunity to watch several games this year and while coming from Grayson and being coached by Mickey Conn, he's well connected to the program. Not sure if he's an early enrollee or not, but outside of Cooper and Bryant, his mechanics best fit what we are trying to do on offense. Great passer, Great vision and good ability to move around in the pocket and use his feet to extend plays downfield. As far as I'm concerned, Hunter Johnson will have a learning curve and take time to develop into the player we expect him to be. He definitely has the tools though...I see him at this point similar to Tucker Israel with better size.

I am thinking we let them compete for the position insteading of handing to to a preselected player

LOL, of course that is what's going to happen. It's always fun to speculate, as a fan, what might happen. Unless of course, Dabo calls and asks for my opinion.

From the last schedule I saw, we do have Kent State

Nov 7, 2016, 6:10 AM

Before auburn, which takes the element of surprise away but if it is Cooper would be some good PT. Many of the "experts" say that since Bryant can't beat out schussler he won't beat out Cooper/Johnson but we'll see what spring brings.

Z. Cooper will start next year. No doubt.

Re: 2017 QB

Cooper will start. Point blank period. KB will be the back up and Tucker Israel will be 3rd string. IF Hunter Johnson doesn't win starting job I would expect he and Chase Brice will get redshirted. Cooper is the guy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If separation isn't clear Cooper will start. Hunter's an EE

Nov 7, 2016, 8:20 AM

Cooper will be given every opportunity to be the guy (assuming Bryant undergoes a position change as most folks believe). If Johnson can't clearly beat him out, the tie goes to Cooper since he's the veteran (albeit only by a semester to Hunter). As an early enrollee if Johnson proves himself to be definitively better than Cooper, he will start. The down side to Johnson being named the guy 1st game though is that if he shows himself to be solid and lasts the season, Cooper likely transfers out after next year.

Here's my take on next year's QB situation. Remember even Watson didn't completely win the starting role in 2014. Stoudt was the starter and Watson came in for spot duty early on in the season. We all know that Watson is a special player. He has the arm strength and running ability plus the mental aptitude to be unbelievable. You don't get too many like him ever. I don't see Johnson/Brice exceeding that when he comes in and actually starting over Cooper and Bryant. I don't quite know if Bryant can pass well enough and consistently enough to do the things we need him to do in the passing game. But with that being said, I expect that Bryant will be the starter coming out of spring camp. Then Cooper will win the job once fall camp begins and the season starts. Bryant will be the backup and Johnson will be 3rd string. Brice will be redshirted.

Whoever the QB is though will have tons of talent around them. I wouldn't be surprised if we ran the ball more with all the talent we have in RBs. Also, the WRs are deep and talented. I told someone before the season began that I expected our defense to be good this year, but next year is the year when they can be all time dominant. We lose very little on the line and not much in the secondary. Also, Lamar and Smith will hopefully be ready to contribute big time at LB.

Whoever starts, after watching this system we MUST have the passing game that can throw more than little quick screens to be effective. Schedule coming outta the gate doesn't allow for time for growing. Another words, we NEED a THROWING QB at the helm!!
