2016 vs 2021

Sep 21, 2021, 3:03 PM

I see a lot of people comparing the start of the 2016 team to this years start.

@ Auburn:
Watson - 19/34 for 248 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Gallman - 30 carries for 123 yards, 1 TD
Williams - 9 catches for 174 yards

399 total yards, 19-13 W

Troy:
Watson - 27/53 for 292 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs
Watson - 10 carries for 55 yards
Ray Ray - 7 catches for 86 yards

416 total yards, 30-24 W

SC State:
Watson - 12/15 for 152 yards, 3 TDs
Feaster - 12 carries for 83 yards, 1 TD
Ray Ray - 4 catches for 60 yards, 2 TDs

555 total yards, 59-0 W

Georgia:
DJ - 19/37 for 178 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT
Dixon - 1 carry for 10 yards
Ngata - 6 catches for 110 yards

180 total yards, 10-3 L

SC State:
DJ - 14/24 for 171 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Shipley - 8 carries for 80 yards, 2 TDs
Ross - 3 catches for 52 yards

504 total yards, 49-3 W

Georgia Tech:
DJ - 18/25 for 126 yards
Shipley - 21 carries for 88 yards, 2 TDs
Ross - 7 catches for 61 yards

284 yards, 14-8 W

Through 3 games...

2016: 1,370 yards, 108 points (457 yards and 36 points per game)
2021: 968 yards, 66 points (323 yards and 22 points per game)

Is there really a comparison to be made?

No there’s not. And on top of that people just need to look with their eyes. Stats do not tell the whole story.

Stats r 4 Losers! Only thing that matters is W's & L's

And the only Poll that matters comes out the 1st week of November.

Any two things can be compared, Comrade. If we are

comparing 2016 start to 2021 start, 2021 comes out looking like the hind end of a stretched out Slinky Dog compared to 2016, though. Especially since 2016 had relatively proven commodities on offense as holdovers from 2015. 2021 had what we THOUGHT was a proven holdover from 2020, but upon further review, the proven part is yet to be proven.

Watson was a junior in 2016, his last year as a starter.

Watson's first year as a starter was in 2014.

This is DJ's first season as a starter. I'd give him a chance, don't you agree?

DW and TL had a few growing pains but neither ever looked as lost as DJ does .
We all knew they would shake it off and would be big time QB’s but with DJ it’s not looking good .

We also had 15 possessions in the Troy game and 12 against Auburn versus only 8 against GT. If we would have had another 5-7 possessions against Tech, our offensive numbers would have been higher. Not exactly apples to apples.

I don't have the stats in front of me, but I think the better comparison for our offense right now is 2014 during the games Watson was out with the hand injury and then the GT game where Watson came back but injured his ACL early in the game.

I seem to remember several awful offensive games that year where we won solely due to having the best defense in the country that year.
