2012 win versus LSU, best team ever beaten by Clemson?

May 28, 2014, 1:29 PM

2 NFL drafts have passed since the 2012 Chick Fil A bowl and the epic victory by Clemson. It was surely the greatest bowl game I've seen Clemson play in my lifetime. I thought that perhaps that LSU team might actually be the most talented team ever beaten by Clemson, even though some other games like the two Orange Bowl wins featured highly ranked name opponents as well. I would be interested to see if any Clemson opponent approaches this breakdown of that LSU team. I'm just counting guys from the last two drafts and not considering any freshmen or sophomores from that squad who have not yet completed eligibility at LSU.
I also leave off the Honey Badger who was drafted that year in the 3rd round but was of course suspended and did not play in the bowl game.

2012 LSU Tigers: Total drafted players 17
1st rounders: Mingo, Reid, Beckham
2nd rounders: Minter, Ferguson, Landry, Hill
3rd rounders: Logan, Montgomery, Turner
4th rounders: Simon, Edwards
5th rounders: Barrow
6th rounders: Ware, Mettenburger, Blue
7th rounders: Wright

This also doesn't account for undrafted free agents who made rosters, but as you can see the draft total is impressive. Just for comparison, here is Clemson's from the last two classes:
2012 Clemson Tigers: Total drafted players 9
1st rounders: Hopkins, Watkins
3rd rounders: Thomas
4th rounders: Goodman, Breeland, Bryant
5th rounders: Meeks
6th rounders: Ellington, Boyd

Pretty impressive victory when you look at this breakdown.

FSU 2003 comes to mind, but that was a good LSU team***

It's definitly up there

And will always be in my mind the most impressive game I've ever seen a Clemson QB play. I've never seen a QB take that much of a beating and get back up and make play after play. Tajh was a monster in that game and Nuk made all that 1st round talent look stupid, all game long.

Also take into account that Sammy was injured

on the 2nd play and Martavis was suspended for the game as well, it just makes that win look even better.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

They got burned by our other 1st round WR , a 6th round QB, and a free agent kicker .

How about Nebraska? Had 5 drafted in

'82, and 7 in 83, to include Roger Craig and Dave Remington. That LSU team was really good though. I didn't realize how good.

Was perhaps Tahjs best game

Put him in the limelight for 2013 Heisman lists and had he gone pro that year after LSU game probably would have been first QB taken before Manuel

Most talented? Probably. Best team? Probably not.
