I didn't get definitive proof, but I think I saw my old Camry, with the roof rack and all, in TR yesterday, so that was cool.

you get it repaired? cost?

guy my bro in law referred me to recommended getting engine pro detailed then drive to make sure that is where the oil is coming from, could be valve covers he says

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Usually a bad head gasket presents with more than an oil

4

May 30, 2023, 8:55 AM

Leak. That gasket isn’t just keeping oil in the engine, it’s also separating the oil from the coolant passageways, so usually you will see coolant in the oil and/or white smoke from the exhaust (coolant getting into compression chamber), as well as you can have some rough running conditions from unintentional vacuum leaks hurting compression. I agree that you should take every cheap step possible to make sure it’s the head gasket, although you can hit the engine yourself with some degreaser and a brush and lightly hose it off. You can also easily test oil and coolant for the presence of coolant in the oil (usually it will be visible to the naked eye)

If you’re going to keep the vehicle, there are multiple “since you have it apart” items I’d probably consider while the engine is that far disassembled.

ok, rookie questions here

May 30, 2023, 9:02 AM

degreaser, simple green, something else?

we will probably try to keep it, just put new tires, replaced brake calipers etc on front and new brakes on back, etc etc

as far as exhaust smoke, white? or just more visible, when we noticed oil, did seem to have more visible exhaust, but was wet and 50 degrees outside

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

oh, and look at coolant

May 30, 2023, 9:03 AM

from radiator, or coolant reservoir?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Look at the oil. It will be

1

May 30, 2023, 9:09 AM

Milkier if it has coolant contaminating it. Also the exhaust smoke will smell “sweet” if there is coolant being burned.

You might be catching it early and neither of those conditions are bad enough to be noticeable yet, and in that case, if you aren’t married to the car, I’d probably try running a can of head gasket sealant with the oil for a thousand miles or so before paying a few grand to change the gasket.

As for degreaser, simple green works, but there are more powerful degreasers you can get at the auto parts store or Walmart car section.

Purple Power degreaser

May 30, 2023, 10:49 AM [ in reply to ok, rookie questions here ]

Non-toxic. Similar to Simple Green but stronger for grease. May be the same manufacturer.

now having new starter, battery, and valve cover gaskets replaced. Valve cover gaskets were leaking onto starter, which ruined starter, which killed battery.

I have a 2000 Camry with 134K, and since 1/1/23, have has new intake manifold, valve cover gaskets, power steering pump, and rack and pinion replaced.

Nothing lasts forever, but Toyota makes good cars that last better than anything else out there, at least in my experience.

On my third Camry

3

May 30, 2023, 12:22 PM

First lasted 235K miles before needing $3.5K or work. Next one was great. Lasted 265K miles. Replaced the muffler, about it. Third one has 210K miles. Aside from an unanticipated brake job, it's been fine as well. Up to probably $1,000 on unexpected repairs on all three, over 22 years. Everything else is regular maintenance, tires, etc.

I've spent less than $60K on cars my entire life (wife's cars excluded).

first 100 or so we real, real hard. Got to burning oil, a few years back but nothing huge was needed until this year when the water pump needed replaced then the alternator nearly got me stranded at GSP and had it worked a little longer would have left me stranded on 85.

The Camry brotherhood. My Mom's 1992 Camry lasted so long

she just eventually got tired of it. Got something new just to have something different to look at.

I have had a Toyota pickup and my current Camry.

Boring? Maybe. Indestructible? Pretty much.

And good for the End Times.
