Targeting on Ray Ray no call

Sep 17, 2017, 8:03 PM

The inconsistency of this foul are out of hand.

I can see the ref on the field missing it but the booth can now buzz down and make the call if it's missed. That makes it inexcusable.

Have you seen that happen yet? I haven't seen it called from the booth once since the rule was changed.

Yes, this happened in week 1, don't remember the game***

Do away with the ejection. Too many times the target drop their head and boom....... You're outa here.

Wayne Gallman was

Sep 17, 2017, 8:57 PM

Knocked out of game last year against NCST. Obvious lead with crown of helmet but was not targeting after review. Last year it was "defenseless" player and this year the "expert" said it didn't matter. I'm completely lost on the rule but I did think Tanner was getting the boot. I missed the shot on Ray Ray. I'm convinced the one's in charge are not all on the same page on the definition of Targetting.

2 weeks in a row that Ray Ray has been targeted

Sep 17, 2017, 9:08 PM

and it has not been callled.

The SEC officials missed one on Davis two weeks ago. It was like a 7 - 8 yard pass to Ray Ray and Davis lead with his helmet into a defenseless Ray Ray's facemask, as he was making the catch.

One must remember that officials always have a bug or sweat in their eyes when it comes to calls that should go our way. Tobacco road still calls the shots in the conference more or less and the centralized replay is located in Greensboro, NC.

See ya'll tomorrow got to go see Madison take care of some zombies now.

Don't you have to be defenseless to get a targeting call?

Sep 17, 2017, 9:32 PM

RRM wasn't while Lamar was being tackled when Muse came in

Leading with the crown of the helmet is all it takes these days. That is why the NCSU player that took out Wayne last year should have been ejected.

Re: Don't you have to be defenseless to get a targeting call?

Sep 17, 2017, 9:43 PM

I can't think of a time that I've seen targeting called without a player being deemed defenseless. If they didn't call it on the Gallman hit... they'll never call it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Don't you have to be defenseless to get a targeting call?

Sep 17, 2017, 9:47 PM

Yeah, the concept is suppose to be that of using the helmet as that of a weapon, while trying to protect the player who is using the crown of their helmet from getting a neck injury, themselves. It is a two way rule to protect both players.

Sep 17, 2017, 9:36 PM [ in reply to Re: 2 weeks in a row that Ray Ray has been targeted ]

Well they did hit Louisville with that chop block call that took away the long run by Jackson when the game was still 19-7. A play or two later is when he threw the pick 6. Not saying it wasn't the right call, but that sort of goes against the "they never make a call that goes our way" statement. The refs obviously make mistakes, but could we at least stop with the "they are out to get us" stuff? If the refs wanted Clemson to lose on a weekly basis then we'd have lost more than 1 ACC game since 2014.

Wow...I missed that one...DISGUSTING!

Sep 17, 2017, 9:40 PM

I couldn't say much about Muse hit to Jackson. I suspected there was little else but to eject Muse.
However, this has to be called equal on both sides.

I'm still livid about the hit on Wayne Gallman last year by Dravius Wright from NC State. I got into it with an NC State fan about how "kind and good" Doeren is as a person and coach. I let 'em have it with Doeren's insane comments on knocking Gallman out of the game.

I like the rule, but it can't be used as a weapon by the refs to even out a game.

If you follow the Louisville-Clemson game thread on Louisville board. They thought Dabo bought the refs and the refs were all against them. Also, they said our defense played dirty and tried to target their players. Go figure.

Marginal _ the defender did not launch and simply stepped

Sep 17, 2017, 10:08 PM

through the initial hit and wrapped up with both arms in a good tackle.

There was helmet to helmet contact but leaving the feet in a launch is the more agregious and flagrant example of targeting .

Re: Marginal _ the defender did not launch and simply stepped

Sep 18, 2017, 12:15 AM

The one that I mentioned on the AU DB Davis was one where he launched and lead with his helmet, while Ray Ray was defenseless and focusing on catching the ball. The AU DB intended to use his helmet into Ray Day's head. Still, Ray Ray caught the ball and bounced right up.

Per NCAA website.

"Football referees will now stop games to immediately review when players are penalized and face ejection for targeting defenseless opponents above the shoulders OR using the crown of the helmet to contact an opponent." Note, the rule says "OR", not "and".

From this clip it looks to me the tackler was using the crown of his helmet, clearly targeting. Muse was guilty as well.

By the way, the chop block was the correct call and an easy one to make. The dude did it right in front of the official.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That literally made me say Oh My God out loud.

I'm having a hard time remembering a time when an opponent targeted CU and it was called. Not hard to remember when it has been called against us. Boulware, Tony Stephens against the dirtpeckers in a ridiculous call where the helmets barely touched at the last part of a follow through. They only have eyes for Clemson.

Re: Targeting on Ray Ray no call

Sep 18, 2017, 8:27 AM

Yeah, I can't recall one, either. We have had one called on us for at least 3 consecutive years and not one called on our opponents in that same timeframe. Also, there has been games like last season's National Championship where the other team committed multiple targeting infractions that were not flagged. How is it that our opponents have not been flagged at all over the course of at least 3 years?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I will say this about the Natty game

Sep 18, 2017, 9:01 AM

Bama got away with two clearly intentional vicious targeting infractions. But then Ben Boulware separated Ridley from his mouthpiece with no call. Knocked the freaking MOUTHPIECE right out of his head and there was no call.

It's obvious that Pac12 crew had no intention of keeping that game safe for the players.

The definition of awesome!

Here's my comment.

Sep 18, 2017, 8:33 AM

UL committing an act of rules violation doesn't justify Clemson players breaking the rules. We should expect that from other teams. That being said, I believe targeting should be a rule violation that the booth can throw a flag on. It should not be allowed to happen whether the officials on the field see it or not.

If you aren't going to enforce rules created for the safety of players then take them off the books. The official who was responsible to flag that targeting call should be fined 2500 dollars.

Re: Here's my comment.

Sep 18, 2017, 8:46 AM

The both can call the infraction. It has happened in at least one game I have watched this season.

And again, we have not had a single opponent called for targeting in 46 games or more.

Some of our guys that got called out was in a situation to where the opposing team's player was going down and our guy ended up with a violation, due to inpredicted movement, it happens and is still a valid violation.
