X beat me to posting this.

This is an extreme mafia move. Don't just kill the oligarchs, kill their families too. Not exactly a subtle warning. But this is also exactly the kind of move that can provoke the palace coup you're trying to suppress.

Strangely, this, to me anyhow, shows just how vulnerable Putin is feeling right now. When authoritarians are feeling threatened, they lash out. When you see him going full mafia like this, it means Putin's upping the ante and feeling particularly threatened. So clearly the little birds are talking, or at least Putin thinks they're talking. And not saying things he likes hearing.

What's even more interesting is how Putin did it...and that he hasn't commented officially afterward. Putin's little gnomes made it look like a murder-suicide...and Putin won't publicly acknowledge that he did it, because that would be an admission he was snuffing out dissenters and making a very bloody and very public example out of them. But that would also be publicly admitting there was high-level dissent within the oligarchy.

Often Putin's lies are as instructive as the truth.

He's on thin ice. And you can hear it creaking beneath his feet right now. Sources close to Putin within the Kremlin have said Putin was once obsessed with that video of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi being dragged through the streets and executed by his own people, would play it over and over again.

You definitely sense it may indeed go that way for him. Especially if Russia loses the war....

I can think of a lot of ways. I'd use a drone, personally. Probably several. If you know where he's going to be, just load a boatload of C-4 into some commonly-available commercial drones and spam the area. Another thing I've been waiting on somebody to use to take out a world leader with - and shockingly, it hasn't happened yet - is one of those remote-controlled sniper rifles. Again, just conceal one where you know he's going to appear, have some nerds sit by their joysticks...and wait. I mean, this crap is available on the freaking Internet, and I don't know how you'd deal with it if you were a protective detail. Absolute nightmare.
