1903 Clemson Football Program

May 11, 2022, 3:08 PM

At the request of BASSDOGMWP I am posting a scan of the cover of the 1903 Clemson vs North Carolina A&M game program along with the page on coach John Heisman. For those interested in history this game was played as part of the SC state fair. It was the first year of a 6 year ban on playing the coots because of the riot at the 1902 game. North Carolina A&M is now NC State. This is also Heisman's last year as Clemson coach as Ga Tech hired him away from us. This is also the oldest known Clemson football program to exist. Finally, the "Pawguy" is not on the program but added to protect the images from being used stolen and reproduced buy a retailer. Enjoy and GO TIGERS!!

Clemson had only been playing football for 7 years at this date. The location, I’m not sure? The first Big Thursday game was played on Elmwood Ave. in the infield of a horse track. I’m not sure how many years game was played there. Then SC played home games on Melton Field that was next to the Russell House where the library is today. The next location was the current fair grounds with a grandstand on one side of the field for spectators. The game must have been there for a number of years, Carolina Stadium (Williams-Brice) was erected late 30’s or early 40’s.

Melton Field must have been the venue for the 02 game. Shortly after the fight, Clemson’s Cadets marched on SC horseshoe with fixed bayonets. They were camped nearby arriving by train the day before.
