Dabo and I are cut from the same piece of cloth.

********
"I am against anything that devalues education," Swinney said. "That's what I'm against. I am for anything that incentivizes education. People will come after me because I've always said that I'm against the professionalism of college athletics, and I am. Kids don't know what they don't know. That's a slippery slope if you professionalize college athletics, and now you've got salaries and taxes and you can fire kids on the spot and they've got to pay for their tuition and they pay for their housing and everything else.

"Athletic directors would sign up for that in a heartbeat. They'd save money."
**********

Dabo is one of the few coaches left who have the same philosophy I do: The primary purpose of an athletic scholarship is to give a person a chance to earn a college degree.

The line has become so blurred, and our culture ahs changed so much, and the pressure is so great to win at all costs, that the majority of coaches put education WAY down on their priority list, if it is even there at all. There primary goal is to win. The easiest way to do this is to recruit the best athletes. The easiest way to do this is to make academics requirements as minimal as possible. If academic requirements were done away with, and the kid could just come to his team and have zero academic requirements (not even sign up for classes, much less attend or pass them) most coaches would sign on for that in a heartbeat.

The #1 purpose for colleges around the entire world was meant for HIGHER education, and once college sports started to resemble professional sports at the college level, it should be, must be taken away from all colleges.

Anything that resembles professional sports at the college level is dead wrong for any institution of higher learning, and it should be terminated or, repealed back to the way college sports existed at the college level 5 years ago, and absolutely no ifs, ands, or but about it, period!!!!!

100% agree, it was the way that college FB was before the NIL, and that God forsaken transfer portal that the brain dead NCAA board of rules, and penalties came up with, with absolutely no rules or guidelines governing the transfer Portal.

The portal is now allowing student athletes to run in, and out of the portal like a revolving door with the only student athletes that are benefiting from that cluster FK, are high 4 star/5 star athletes jumping from one program to the next until they find a starting position at a school with less talent at their position.

That leaves a much worse cluster FK with the portal being massively over loaded with decent but underwhelming 4 star recruits, and 3 star recruits that just needs to be developed, but are now stuck in the portal without a FB scholarship, and they can't afford college without a FB scholarship.

Then here comes the next recruiting class that coaches are choosing the best of the best from the HS pool of 4, 5 star recruits, and they are grabbing up talented 3 star recruits, and if they don't progress really fast, coaches will ignore them until they to enter the portal, and that's bogging down the portal with kids that will never find a school that will take them in under a FB scholarship bc coaches need players that will help attract NIL money.

Dabo is 100% right with his concerns of the NIL combined with limitless transfers through what they named the transfer portal. Those two things together creates a NFL player mill that the NFL will use for culling out only the best of the best, and the rest are left without a college education even though they went to college at one of the Top colleges in America....

Change is coming. Adapt or get left behind.

Apr 9, 2022, 6:58 AM

“People will come after me because I've always said that I'm against the professionalism of college athletics, and I am.”

The “professionalism of college athletics” has always been a thing, except for one aspect of it: the players. That’s the one aspect of it people are paying to see.

Every other aspect has always been professional, from the rising ticket prices to the massive spending on facilities to the astronomical rise in coaching salaries. Every bit of it funded by people who are paying to see one thing and one thing only: the players performing on the field/court. That’s it.

Change is coming. And it will be fine. We used to have a huge controversy about how much and what kind of food a school could provide for players. Same old talk. It was the end of college sports! The programs that could afford more would get all the players and other schools would lose it all and start shutting down their sports programs!

Total doomsday nonsense then, and now.

It takes a real twisted sense of entitlement to pretend you’re against “the professionalism of college athletics” when you’re personally being paid millions of dollars to manage a program that operates on tens or hundreds of millions of dollars — every penny of which is generated by the people you’re trying to limit in terms of what they can receive in compensation. Absolute entitlement. Total hypocrisy.

Re: Change is coming. Adapt or get left behind.

Apr 9, 2022, 8:51 AM

Some of adapting means changing your viewpoints when you realize that they may have been short sighted. I believe that Dabo is in the process of doing that. It does not mean that you change your core beliefs, but it does mean that you sometimes have to figure out how to make things work with them that seem to be contradictory. This doesn't make you a hypocrite. It makes you torn.

I believe that Dabo is a little too caught up with some of the negative effects of NIL, rather than viewing it as an opportunity to educate the players. Programs should be in place to teach them about taxes, contracts, and finding responsible people (ie lawyers, agents, accountants) to delegate work to, in areas that the student athlete may not have the time or know how to do themselves.

NIL is a big change and everything that comes with it is not a benefit, even when reducing it just to the scope of the players. For Dabo, I believe that he felt like the disadvantages outweighed the advantages for players as a whole, and maybe he still does. You are right he will have to adapt. Part of that will be by using the resources of this program to eliminate or even reverse the disadvantages of the current system.

There has been an awful lot of money made on the backs of college athletes, but if all that is done is to undo the shackles, it will be of no benefit to anyone. Chaos will reign and the sport will suffer. However, desperation is an excellent source of inspiration. Programs are going to figure out how to make it a benefit to their players, because that will benefit them. They will figure out how to eliminate the pitfalls and amplify the benefits, because it will benefit them. Call it survival of the fittest. Call it capitalism in an amateur environment. Give it time and it will work, and I trust that Dabo will not become a victim of Darwinism.

Disagree… keep the main thing the main thing… education

Apr 10, 2022, 12:07 PM

If you abandon that aspect of college athletics, then you no longer have college athletics. You have a semi-pro minor league system. Colleges need not even have a football program at all at that point.

Here’s the biggest problems:

1. lack of controls/regulations with how NIL can be abused and exploited to essentially buy players
2. lack of controls/regulations with some teams tampering players to incentivize them to enter with the transfer portal

Both ignore or harm the educational aspect of these kids getting their college degree, which is a longer term benefit for 90% of them than playing college football b/c most want make the NFL. And then what? No degree severely limits your options. You can get a coaching job without a degree.

So how do these two things harm the educational aspect of kids getting their college degree? Glad you asked.

Assume a booster club of a big time college program that is hellbent to win at all costs establishes an NIL program to woo a player to go there to play for the $$ e.g Texas AM). And that college gives 2 craps or a holler less about the kid actually getting a degree. Just play football and win and the NIL payout will flow. However, if you turn out to be no good in our opinion, oh well, we may cut you from the team. Good luck.

A scholarship should be a long term commitment from both parties - regardless of how things turn out on the field!

Now let’s look at the transfer portal. Say a promising defensive player is playing for the school he committed to. And he is getting starting time and all, but he makes it known to others that he prefers D end instead of nose guard. However, the team is stacked at D end so to move him there will take development time and the guys already there will hold their starting jobs while he is developing.

Now comes another player from another team to talk with him and let him know that where he is playing, if he entered the transfer portal, they would ###### him up. (This is what just happened to WVU). So he enters the portal, but some other dude also enters the portal and that other team takes the other guy and leaves this guy on the shelf. Now he has no college scholarship. No training facility. No games he can play in to show his talents. There are hundreds of guys in the portal in this exact situation. Their chance of making it in football drops by 200%! And now they get no degree either! The big time programs don’t care. They keep moving on.

It is actually very sick to prey on young minds that have aspirations but don’t understand fully yet the consequences of their decisions. Life has to be about more than football in these young peoples lives.. THIS is what Swinney is trying to say. As responsible adults with a crap load of power and $, we all should care and make that the priority!

That is why I agree with Dabo so much. Do the right thing NCAA and college presidents!

I don’t know how old u are but I do know that u are either really ignorant or just being sarcastic. U obviously don’t know that Clemson has been one of the “haves” for well over a decade?? Also, do u not know that Clemson raised over 1B $ in a massive capital campaign just a few years ago? Have u NOT seen the football facilities which are truly some of the best in the nation?? All the things that helped Clemson thrive in the 80s, part of the 90a & certainly the past 10 years will help Clemson stay relevant indefinitely & through all the changes going on now and in the future…those things don’t just go away because of people like u who are scared of change. True brave men & women can adapt, change & advance as things inevitably change! Clemson will continue to adjust & thrive in the ever changing landscape of college football as they have despite the frustration of clowns like Paul Finebaum!!

Re: TNET: Swinney says there's a "complete blowup" coming for college football and it's needed

Apr 9, 2022, 3:00 PM

Allowing teams to play 1A/FBS football puts a tremendous amount of pressure on all aspects of a Universities financial output for one sport to remain relevant. The Power Five Conferences have been in place and continue to garner financial residue based on their playing in high paying and top end Bowl Games. By the time the lesser Conferences get to the trough there is little left to scramble for and the cost of doing business is enormous. Yes there will always be a Boise State, Cincinnati, Northern Illinois or App State. However unless you are welcomed to a big boy Conference, the recognition factor goes way down, but the costs escalate exponentially !! Yes it can be argued that each Big Conference has a few lesser teams. Some rise up periodically like Oregon State or Indiana, but by and large those teams are cannon fodder for Ohio State and Alabama. Now taking the cream of the crop, regardless of Conference and having them play each other creates a far more stable system and an easily recognized National Champion. No Div 2 games and the remainder of the teams could play One Tier below for their own title. It could also conceivably get rid of 48 totally useless bowl games that have little bearing except to the teams participating. Thanks for listening

Apr 9, 2022, 6:03 PM

…and I am glad that he did say it.

He’s right…they (media) will come after him with sharpened knives, looking to extract some flesh from CDS.

I think he will be able to handle it. It seems like he has handled it before.

But…the state of college football is exactly on the track that the state of California (yes, this is where the original lawsuit was filed) had in mind, so long as it continues on this money-grab trajectory.
