It doesn't seem to bother him that the big revenue generators in the conference are really getting pissed!!! It's time for the ACC to nut up or shut up.

FSU Football has sucked for a decade

11

Mar 2, 2023, 1:36 PM

Though recently emerging from their coma, FSU AD comments are on target after Clemson Football has unilaterally funded the ACC these past ten years. Most conference teams have lived on redistribution of Clemson’s earnings.

Re: FSU Football has sucked for a decade

Absolutely, and not one of them would vote to change the way the way the money that Clemson has brought to the conference has been spit up, that would be the same as cutting off the hand that was feeding them, and it would be stupid for them to vote the money winner gets the biggest portion of the money. They would be a whole worse off than the entire conference is now, but with a yes vote Clemson would have the biggest bank account that would us by leaving them scratching like a chicken trying to survive. I can't believe that Phillips even made a comment like that. The only way the winners get the most of what they brought in, is if Phillips and the trustees made that policy on their own behind closed doors, and if they done that, that would be no different than putting a knife to their own throats and jerking it across the jugular vein themselves!!!!

I call it the Bobby Bowden curse. A year or two before Bobby Bowden came to FSU, the Seminoles were considering dropping football as a sport. Then Bowden came in and saved the program.

Many of you are correct. When FSU dominated the ACC they never complained. Since Clemson has dominated the conference FSU’s football program crashed and burned. It may be on the rise again but that takes money, $$$$$$$ that FSU is running short of. I remember watching a game where there was a fan sitting alone reading a book. There were no fans close to him. It reminded of the coots home games in the 3rd quarter. Lol 😂 FSU has lost a lot of season ticket revenue as well as BG revenue since Jimbo left them in a mess. I wonder how many former HC’s FSU is currently paying and for how long. ?? How much is the current HC making ??

In his defense he inherited a tough situation with no easy solution. He is scraping for answers, but there is no known way to reduce the revenue gap and keep the conference together. Swofford and the conference presidents made a huge mistake by signing the GOR. It may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but was for much too long a period of time in today's world that is rapidly changing.

Re: TNET: ACC commish reacts to ESPN on FSU AD addressing conference revenue issues

1

Mar 2, 2023, 3:25 PM

That SEC speculation could not be more wrong.

ESPN has a deal in place for all of the SEC games. If Greg Sankey could have delivered an expanded playoff to ESPN without them having to competitively bid for it, ESPN would have more money floating around to give the SEC because of the addition of two big brands. They don't have that incentive now.

They will likely add some game inventory and will probably increase the payout a little, but I would bet my own money that the per-team payout in the SEC will not budge. It would make as much sense as paying the ACC more because FSU is complaining.

Oh you can bet that the per team payout will increase. Maybe not as drastically as the chart indicates, but their per team payout will more than outpace the ACC team payout. Now that you can bet your own money on.

2

Mar 2, 2023, 6:58 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: ACC commish reacts to ESPN on FSU AD addressing conference revenue issues ]

Your’s looks like smart analysis to me. As others have often written, the conference expansions are all about capturing the biggest revenue growth aspect of CFB … large new revenues from the expanded playoffs.

(*). My curiosity about mega conferences of SEC and B1G is whether the value of in-season games will deteriorate. The conferences will not bear any short term risk; all of that will be borne by the networks.

SEC: For the SEC to retain its value (when compared to other conferences’ value) to ESPN, it did so by expanding by adding two more power teams which, in their own right, bring a good audience from their fan base. Simply from the non-playoff ‘value-added’ aspects, neither TX nor OK have anything other than an additive impact. In other words, since SEC is only digging deeper into regular season revenues by adding TX & OK, there isn’t any special ‘new geography’ or ‘fill a deficiency in game day content’ by bringing in TX &/or OK.

(*). But with their prime in-season programming slots already full up with games, how will relegating Mizzou vs Kentucky or U.of S.Carolina vs Vandy to the soon-to-come expanded Thursday or the ‘new’ Wednesday night slot help to maintain the weighted average value of in-season games?

(*). I believe that the overall weighted average revenue value (I.e.,the weighted average TV ratings value) of SEC in-season games will actually decline somewhat.

Xxxxxxxxx

B1G: Their geographical expansion model has potential to improve overall viewership more for the entirety of their in-season games. However, if B1G’s expansion goes beyond USC and UCLA (I.e., OR and WA), then they too will face the dilution effect of having too many ‘shows’ than there are good slots to broadcast those games. Think of IN vs Iowa or MD vs Northwestern. Worse for the new Left Coast B1G is that the impact from disenfranchised fans from schools like Cal, Stanford, OR State, Utah, AZ, AZ State as far as overall viewer interest. Overall Ratings for B1G / PAC 12 super conference games will be eroded by those fans watching games from other conferences, or (worse) in losing some fundamental interest in CFB in general.a

In other words, B1G expansion also risks diluting the weighted average viewer ratings for the entirety of the conference’s in-season slate.

Xxxxxxxx

The playoffs gamble - yes for the networks. Not so much (short term) for the new Super Conferences.

The networks are already gambling that the growth from playoffs ratings revenues will greatly exceed the decline for overall average in-season game ratings. As long as these new cable contracts remain in place (after negotiations had been concluded) every school that’s in the new Super Conference wins.

The networks darn well better be right.

Xxxxxxxx

(***). After this first iteration of Super Conference cable contracts expires, I’m betting that subsequent contracts will be LESS lucrative for the Super Conferences.

ESPN and Fox / NBC / CBS will be disappointed in the profits that they get from their first contracts with the new Super Conferences.

Xxxxxxxx

Unfortunately for Clemson and FSU, the overspending that Fox / CBS / NBC had done with B1G, along overspending that ESPN has done with SEC, won’t help us.

The sports networks are locked into a new battle of attrition via their respective Super Conference partners. The conferences are the arms dealers that are selling the weapons that the networks are buying for conducting this war. The arms dealers are the only sure winners.

Re: TNET: ACC commish reacts to ESPN on FSU AD addressing conference revenue issues

Mar 6, 2023, 10:17 AM

I have ask myself Why would ESPN and other networks go out on the limb further increasing TV contracts with a decline in college football attendance and offer the SEC and Big 10 more money. And I believe TV ratings are down too.

About 4 or 5 years ago I spoke with a friend who is an assistant AD. He said that coaches salaries, building and maintaining new facilities, and TV money would reach a point where it would no longer be sustainable. How close are we to that being in that situation. ???

College athletics in 2020 and 2021 reminds me of the strikes in MLB back in the late 60’s and 70’s and the strike in 94 which eliminated the WS. At the time player’s became the winners. Now in today’s chaotic sports economy who will be the biggest loser other than the fans.??

It seems to me the only issue is the product on the field and small markets. Not sure how the ACC can change that other than adding a big market team.

We complain about ESPN and the SEC and the B1G but the bottom line is those conferences have the teams the majority of the nation wants to watch. Nobody gives a #### about Wake, Duke, GT, Syracuse, Virginia, VT, UNC when talking football outside their small market areas.

The teams we added did nothing to boost the conference and are not showing any promise that that will change anytime soon. Add in the revenue gap which is getting larger by the year and it’s not looking good.

I don’t see a path forward.

One thing that is interesting about his position, is that keeping the ACC together at this point is really only in the interest of a portion of the teams. The bottom feeders are likely more than happy with the contract, and that it’s locked up for so long, as they could not get an equivalent deal on the open market. Other than making more money out of thin air, it’s pretty much impossible for him to take actions that benefit everyone, and instead, they will likely benefit some teams to the detriment of the others.

I know that it was Swofford that did it, but I lost the last bit of confidence that I had in the ACC when they let Notre Dame use the conference for one year and did not get anything out of it.

Notre Dame had a great team going into that year, and was reliant on the ACC to let them in so they could have a FB season. In business, we call that leverage. Swoffy apparently had no idea how that worked, so he just let them in. He could have leveraged their desperation into a multi-year commitment, which would have led to more revenue for the conference. It would not have made up the gap, but crumbs make a cake, and you get what you can and eventually you are in a good spot.

Yes, SEC revenue will be going to over 100 million per year toward the end of the contract. This is not speculation. Its a shame you are in a basketball conference and most of the teams don't give a hoot for football. This now shows up on what the ACC is worth. Why even continue the farce of calling college football an amateur sport? Clemson made more money last year than ever before. It is true that the SEC, who sold their soul long ago, and the B1G who is seeking to prostitute herself as quickly, made more money than we did, but that is not really the issue, or at least, it should not be if we maintain anything like an amateur standing.

ESPN should pay the big 5 conferences equally. Why pay one conference more than another? That seems wrong. Almost like ESPN is choosing winners and lovers, and promoting a non-level playing field.

success is based on revenue sharing! For the long term health of college football, it should have revenue sharing too. This could be accomplished by pulling the top 50 or so teams out of their conferences (football only), and have a top division for those wanting to play big boy football. Keep the existing conference setup for all other sports.

These top lets say 48 teams, could be split into four divisions for scheduling, then the top two from each division get into the playoff!

This trend towards super-conferences is terrible for the non-revenue sports!

Because some conferences make more money for them than others.

Good for FSU's AD. His is the first shoe to drop, but it is hard to think the big football schools in the ACC have not been thinking long and hard about what the AD said. It's all about money, and that is never more true than when the amount of money is huge. I think $30 million may be a less than accurate estimate. I've heard (in media) talk about $50 million.

Seems to me the ACC has to find a way to be folded into the SEC or Big Ten or some into both. This is what will happen in a few years anyway, and meanwhile big bucks will be lost each year.

No one can expect the ACC Commissioner to be enthusiastic about what lies down the road. His very good and prestigious position will disappear or be dramatically diminished with the departure of even a few of the ACC schools.

That extra money could help athletically, and do wonders academically.

About Market Size

Mar 5, 2023, 8:12 AM

The ACC actually has some big market areas even if the current TV ratings don’t reflect the populations. Atlanta, Pittsburg, Boston and the state of New York are big as they get. Obviously, if those areas had great teams the ratings would be fantastic.

The ACC is slowing dying IMO
It’s a dang shame , the ACC has some great schools / teams
I don’t care for FS who but they are a top their program
Mark it down unless the powers that be change their way of thinking nothing will stop the departure of the top tier schools from leaving
NIL will ruin college football unless the NCAA starts to govern it better , its getting out of control
It business plain and simple loyalty only goes so far
Dang I miss the good ole days
Anyway As always GO TIGERS

When FSU basically owned the ACC I never heard any complaints from FSU about financial problems. Since Clemson has dominated the ACC and FSU has been irrelevant how many HC’s have the fired. ?? How many of those HC’s are they still paying ??. FSU use to fill their stadium when they were winning, they sold a lot of merchandise and made more money because they played in big BG’s with more of their fans going to those games. They were winning which brought in more revenue.

As FSU tries to get back to where they were for so many years in the 80’s, 90’s and most of the first 10 to 12 years of the 2000’s they are facing the same problem many other programs are facing lack of money. They need to increase revenue.

In 2016 when Clemson won its 2nd NC I believe the athletic department still lost $1 million dollars because of the cost to play a game to get into the NC game and having to share equally earned revenue with other conference teams. The other ACC teams did not pay Clemson’s expenses to play in the CFP’s. But they made money from our success.

I honestly do not know what the solutions are to the ACC’s financial crisis. Anyway you try to restructure the ACC most teams will suffer financially more than Clemson and maybe FSU and schools that are becoming more competitive again. A lot of these problems IMO you have to put on Swofford and the lame NCAA and ESPN.

If you restructure the ACC schools must meet certain criteria to be a part of the conference. We need to get rid of some schools and go after quality programs. I would like to see the ACC ###### away a couple of SEC schools like Auburn and Ole Miss or teams who are sick of Alabama and / or a couple of Big 10 teams who are sick of OSU. I know this is wishful thanking.

With the current contract Clemson is part, is there anyway out. ?? Which conference would best suite Clemson ???

Swofford retired just before the ???? Hit the fan. I think he knew he had mismanaged the future of the ACC.

There is a loop hole in the current TV contract that offers a way out. The current members must vote unanimously to dissolve the acc. All the teams have to leave.

I don’t think the smaller schools will do this. That $30 million finds all the other sports. There will be 2-3 holdouts.

The revenue disparity was not as large when Florida St. was dominant.

In fact, if you are talking about the 90s and 2000s, the ACC had the largest payout of any conference at that time.
