THE THERMOSTAT SHOULD NEVER BE CLOSE TO THE RETURN.

Solution: Tear out necessary walls, reroute ductwork and reposition return. replace sheetrock.

OR

Change thermostat location...

I did notice though that 74F with Thermostat 1 was 75F with the new smart thermostat.
