Really hating what college football is becoming...

21

Jan 4, 2023, 9:58 AM

One of the main reasons a lot of people prefer/preferred college football over pro ball is the fact that these kids were playing for the love of the game and a possible opportunity to make it to the league.

Now it's pay to play, what can you do for me, etc. I don't blame the kids. I'd probably chase the money too at that age, but it is ruining the game.

If some kind of rules or restrictions aren't put in place soon as far as NIL and the Portal goes then college football will lose a lot of it's appeal to a lot of people.

If I were a UGA, Tulane, TCU etc. fan, I would be ecstatic after watching those exciting games.

There is no school pride or commitment. I don't blame the kids either; they should have been given something all along, but not without rules.

Now we have coaches actively recruiting other teams' rosters, and it's sickening.

The ratio of money they are bringing in verses what they are

Same could be said of the majority of employees (especially

treat college football players like employees in a business. NIL and the portal are the beginning of that, so you got your wish. Let's see how that model effects college football in the long run. As it becomes more and more about the money for all the players and the schools and education mean less, it will be interesting to see how that feels for us fans. I predict that eventually the schools will have to pay all the players a salary or this system will get so lopsided and imbalanced that a LOT of fans will lose interest because their once-competitive school can no longer compete.

The amount of money I was paid at my job as a landscaper for many years compared to what was brought in by the company I worked for wasn't even close to equitable.

Somehow there is a HUGE OVERVALUATION being paid to athletes!!!

What about the working stiffs?

the fact that they were even ALLOWED

Jan 4, 2023, 10:21 AM [ in reply to The ratio of money they are bringing in verses what they are ]

in school is the biggest perk no 1 ever acknowledges. every 1 just accepts it now as an expectation.
most of these athletes would not sniff these schools based solely on their academic standing like most other kids their age.

no1 wants to give credit to the big bad evil capitalistic empire that bent all the admission rules to give these kids the opportunities they do have.

and where did this money go? Most if it goes right back to the student athletes. The billion dollars the school gets from football goes to the ladies row team that makes negative three dollars and 50 cent per season. The old evil system favored socialism more than capitalism.

The only people really guilty in this so called mistreatment of student athletes is the coaches/admin. I cant really defend some 1 making more money to coach "kid" sports as they do in the pros.

ok.. enough of my whiny, pointless ranting.

Re: the fact that they were even ALLOWED

Jan 4, 2023, 10:41 AM

Admission is a huge perk, but like you said a lot of money goes back in for education. The graduation rate of athletes at most schools, I believe, is higher than the general student body. The idea of the student athlete has advanced a lot since I was in school.

It has filtered down to the high school level, so that athletes put in the work to qualify academically. Many graduate early and start college in the Spring of what would be their senior year. These days many leave with 2 degrees, or at least start a graduate program.

There a lot of kids that wouldn't get in otherwise. They are given every advantage during their time here or whatever college they choose. That does not mean that we should not give them credit for making the most of those advantages and applaud the system for what might be its biggest asset.

Re: the fact that they were even ALLOWED

Jan 4, 2023, 10:47 AM

To clarify, I am not saying that this should be seen as compensation. I am trying to say that this is a win/win. It is to the school's benefit as much as the student when it produces quality graduates. The system allows the success for some that might not be there otherwise, and that is good for both parties.

Jan 4, 2023, 1:21 PM [ in reply to Re: the fact that they were even ALLOWED ]

All degrees are not equally difficult. How many athletes graduate with degrees in engineering, biology, physics, etc. So a simple percentage of athlete who graduate is not really relevant.

All good points.....

Jan 4, 2023, 10:28 AM [ in reply to The ratio of money they are bringing in verses what they are ]

maybe something could have been done! If it were regulated and thought out, then we wouldn't have the issues we have today.

But education is important and definitely financially beneficial. But we are talking billions made off these kids' backs.

Someone mentioned the employee/employer relationship....great disparities lead to unions.

College football isn't what it once was to me. Hope it doesn't continue down a broken road.

but now that the horse is out of the barn, it will be incredibly difficult to put it back in. All we can do is hope the "powers that be" (whoever or whatever that is) realizes what a mess this has created and implement some type of regulatory system to monitor and control it.

Minor league football.

Re: Really hating what college football is becoming...

Jan 4, 2023, 1:04 PM

In my opinion it is minor league pro football. Therefore, the answer to this NIL problem
is have the NFL give a sum of money to the NCAA or some other agency to be distributed
equally to all FBS (maybe more per school to power 5) schools to be distributed to the football players.

That is about the closest way to standardize college player revenue. Each school
has the same amount to spend to maximize their situation.

They could fix it tomorrow if they wanted to. Just make transfers that haven't graduated yet sit out a year. Like they used to have it. No exceptions, problem solved. Just the NCAA has no backbone.

Yes, used to be about “ I want to play for the school because I believe in the culture and I believe in the coach” you were committed for at least three years. Quite frankly it takes at least a year to get a player indoctrinated in your culture.

Now it’s more like “I’ll give you 10 games and if I’m not getting my snaps, I’m out of here”

Hard to get excited about a big recruit when basically you’re just renting him now

I think it's naive to think players were playing for the love of the game or love for the school. Free education and chance to make it as a pro is just "what can you do for me" by another name. Like most things, its always been about self-interests.

Re: Really hating what college football is becoming...

Yeah but the big difference is in the past when you committed to a school you’re more than likely we’re making a college career long pledge, now you’re committing for one season. The service to self has been magnified greatly

Already has for me. I think one of reasons you see Harbaugh move from college to the NFL. No longer recruiting and building a team you just go and pick off somebody else’s players because you got the money. EX: Maye of NC 5 million offer from Georgia and Alabama.

Re: Really hating what college football is becoming...

Football is wearing on me. I don't think it's majorly attributed to NIL or transfer portal though. My insane love for it started to give way years before then. I don't know why and I'm not gonna sit down and psychoanalyze every detail why. But I was talking to my dad the other night about it and I give it 5-10 more years before I probably hang it up for good, which hurts to say. Still will always be a Tiger fan though.

Here is what I think should happen. Much like baseball or basketball, if a talented kid is drafted and wants to go pro, then they make a decision to enter draft or go play college. With that said, if they choose the college route and sign a LOI, then they should be held to it, at minimum 3 years. If things don't pan out, they can then try the pro route, but they should not be allowed to transfer to another school without sitting out a year. I realize football requires more physical maturity. I also realize NFL teams are not ready to draft highschool kids. But here's the thing, playing college sports is privilege. No one is forcing kids to sign a scholarship. If football is a kid's path and they don't want to commit to play college ball for 3 years, then they can seek development some other way, but not at the expense of a college football program. College football, IMO, is the NFL's default farm system. The NFL could care less about transfers or NIL offers. They are reaping the benefits of college developed talent at no cost. The integrity of college football is at stake and changes need to be made.
