5 million seems way low. Good/bad is many companies have

cyberinsurance for this now, which probably means more are able to pay up.

Yeah, $5mil seems a bit unbelievable

If I'm going to go through the risk of hacking major infrastructure of the most powerful nation in the world and put that kind of target on my back, I think my demands would be closer to the $1billion range.

$5 mill sounds smart to me.

Again a fortune for that 16yo kid in his parents basement in Romania.

Plus, the more money you extort, the easier it will be to find you. I promise every spy asset in whatever ####hole these hackers call home, everyone is being watched. Who runs out and buys a Lambo, or a massive house, or whatever. They're watching and you try to spend lavishly and you will put a bullseye on your head.

$5mil vs $1bil in ransom isn't going to impact the tenacity

in which a country comes after you if you shut down one of their major gas pipelines. Once you do it, you might as well get as much as you can. Color me skeptical that this was just some 16 year old kid in his parents basement who did it for the lulz.

Prolly not. But from what it sounds like

their decryption tool was no faster than restoring from backups.

Whatever. Odds are they know exactly who did it, Assuming it was some dumb employee who clicked something. If they were breached, then maybe not so much but from what I understand, ransomware hacks usually come through the front door. Spam email attachment or some such garbage.

ever decrypted a hard drive?

It's processor and disk size dependent, and then the unlock is applied to the encryption algorithm.

It's not instant, by any means.

There’s so many different angles to this issue.

All I can say is the solutions will be multiple and difficult.

Privately held Utility infrastructure has a lot of legitimate stakeholders atypical of most private enterprises.
