Swinney on Lakip competing on kick-offs

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney answered questions during the weekly ACC media teleconference on Wednesday and had the following to say about the availability of kicker Ammon Lakip and the competition at kick-off.

"Like I said the other day, he'll (Lakip) have a chance to compete," Swinney said. "It would be great for him to take a little of that pressure off of (Greg) Huegel, but we'll evaluate that during practice and see how it goes. Greg has done a fine job. He hasn't been bad at all. We had a touchback the other night, he's had a couple of them, and Pinion had -- he didn't have a ton of touchdowns. He had returns, too."

Swinney thinks that the real concern has been the poor angles and tackling that have led to some outstanding returns by the opposition.

"You've got to cover the kick is the bottom line, and you have to expect it to be returned every single time and do your job, so that's where we have to improve," Swinney said. "Our kicks have been fine. Our coverage has been poor. It's just that simple, and that's where we've got to improve our team if we're going to have a great October and November, and so that's where we have a lot of emphasis this week in practice in trying to shore up some things, and again, how we're coaching it, it's personnel, it's everything. But Ammon will definitely have a chance to get a good look as the kickoff guy, and he's back at work as a field goal guy, and he's our second-team guy right now, and we'll see where it goes."
