Clemson, S.C.—Patrick Sapp threw for 396 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Orange Team to a 56-26 victory in the fifth annual Clemson Sons Bowl at Memorial Stadium. The flag football game competition between former Clemson football players was a prelim to the Clemson Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 9.

Sapp completed 15-21 passes in accounting for nearly 400 yards threw the air and 41 points on touchdowns and extra points.. He threw his six scoring passes to Kevin Youngblood (2), Joe Don Reames, William Bell, Sadat Chambers, and Harold Coleman. Reames also scored on a nine-yard run and finished with 68 yards rushing in just three attempts.

The victorious Orange team had two players with 100 yard receiving games as Coleman finished with three catches for 112 yards, including a 99-yarder from Sapp in the first half. Youngblood finished with three catches with 102 yards. All three of his receptions were at least 30 yards. Sadat Chambers had just one reception, but it went for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 20-yard interception return on defense.

The Orange team took a commanding lead in the first half when Coleman caught the 99-yard scoring pass from Sapp, then on the next possession, Chris Chancellor returned an interception 105 yards for a score to give the Orange team a 31-6 lead. Chancellor also intercepted an extra point pass attempt by the white team and ran it back 100 yards for two points.

The White team moved the ball all game behind quarterbacks Homer Jordan and Rush Lowther and gained 635 yards of offense, but had problems on fourth down in the red-zone. Lowther completed 20 of 31 passes for 265 yards and touchdown, while Jordan, the starting quarterback for Clemson’s 1981 National Championship team, hit on 13 of 20 passes for 185 yards and a score. Michael Allen completed 6-11 passes for 125 yards and two scores in the fourth period.

The White team threw for 628 yards and had four 100-yard receivers, yet lost the game. Airese Currie, the ACC’s leading receiver as a senior in 2004, had six receptions for 173 yards. He added a 20 yard run and also completed 4-8 passes for 49 yards. Former walk-on George Rabon had the most receptions with 10 for 101 yards and a score, while Xavier Dye had eight receptions for 112 yards and a 38-yard touchdown. Former punter Chuck Lynch had six catches for 103 yards.

The difference in the game was the Orange defense, which had three sacks and three interceptions. In addition to Chancellor’s 105 yard return, Youngblood and Chambers also had interceptions.
