Playing time breakdown: Clemson depth built up going into Playoff

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson mixes in more reserves consistently than any Playoff contender and that positions them well depth-wise late in the year.

Ahead of last year's Playoff semifinal with Notre Dame, Albert Huggins had to step for the suspended Dexter Lawrence having averaged 24 snaps a game as a backup. Huggins went on to tally six stops over two Playoff games.

Clemson heads into the playoffs this season with 40 players having logged at least 200 snaps -- and 48 who've averaged double-digit snaps a game.

The defensive ends on one side and receivers and the offensive line on the other are prime examples.

The Tigers' co-starters at defensive end have one starter averaging 30 snaps (Xavier Thomas, 33) and three more with at least 23 per (Justin Foster, 29; Logan Rudolph, 26; K.J. Henry, 23).

Nine Clemson receivers average double-digits, led by Justyn Ross (39). Clemson's offensive line has 10 averaging double-digit snaps with Tremayne Anchrum pacing the group (54 per game) and true freshman Will Putnam logging 15 snaps a game.

On the defensive side, Isaiah Simmons has played a unit-high 645 snaps and totaled seven sacks, seven more tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and 14 quarterback pressures with two interceptions. He's averaged a tackle every seven plays, which is only bettered by James Skalski among starters (6.2). Reserves Lannden Zanders (5.3) and Jake Venables (5.5) have also been productive off the bench.

On offense, Trevor Lawrence has averaged 5.1 yards per snap and been responsible for a touchdown every 17 snaps.

Among true freshmen against Virginia, Keith Maguire played his fourth game of the season toward a redshirt, while punter Aidan Swanson saw his third contest of the year.
